Specialty Coder
Accurate specialty coding is how compassionate care stays available. You will turn complex encounters into complete, defensible records so clinicians can stay with patients, quality data stays trustworthy, and communities—including those with fewer resources—continue to receive care. This role matters because every coded record protects integrity, supports fair reimbursement, and keeps the healing mission financially sound.
Performance Objectives
- Code specialty inpatient and outpatient encounters to official guidelines so first-pass accuracy meets or exceeds department targets.
- Resolve coding edits, queries, and documentation gaps within agreed turnaround times, reducing rework and delayed claims.
- Apply ICD-10-CM, ICD-10-PCS, CPT, and HCPCS correctly so case mix, quality measures, and reimbursement reflect the care delivered.
- Identify documentation patterns that create compliance or denial risk and recommend specific fixes clinicians and CDI partners can use.
- Maintain productivity standards without sacrificing audit quality, and correct assigned findings before the next review cycle.
- Protect patient dignity and confidentiality in every record, query, and handoff.
Environment & Resources
You will work with HIM, CDI, revenue cycle, and specialty clinicians in a large, multispecialty faith-based health ministry. The role reports to coding leadership and uses the electronic health record, encoder and reference tools, and AI-assisted documentation support. Education time, coding resources, and a defined audit and query process are provided so performance is measurable and support is clear.
Essential Qualifications
- Active CPC, CCS, CIC, or equivalent specialty coding credential required for the assigned setting.
- Demonstrated specialty coding experience with measurable accuracy and productivity.
- Working command of current ICD-10-CM/PCS, CPT, HCPCS, and official coding guidance.
- Ability to write clear, compliant queries and explain coding decisions to clinical partners.
- Proficiency with an EHR and encoder; comfort using technology that reduces clerical burden.
- Consistent judgment on privacy, ethics, and medical-necessity documentation.
Role Selling Points
- Mission-driven work guided by compassion, excellence, integrity, dignity, stewardship, and ethics.
- A broad specialty network where coding skill directly supports high-quality, patient-centered care.
- Technology that cuts paperwork so your expertise goes to complex cases, not clerical rework.
- Competitive pay and benefits, with room to grow across hospitals, clinics, and outpatient services.
- A culture that expects associates to live the mission, not only meet a production number.
