We are seeking a seasoned Solution Architect to lead the transition and modernization of a client’s legacy application ecosystem built on VBScript and Microsoft Access.
Must be comfortable travelling for a week in first month to Portland, ME for Knowledge transfer.
This role has two critical phases:
Phase 1 – Knowledge Transfer & Legacy Ownership
Partner closely with the retiring Solution Architect to:
Phase 2 – Modernization Strategy & Execution
Lead the architecture and technical roadmap to modernize theclient’s legacy platform in collaboration with Accion Labs’ Microsoft Practice.The architect will design and spearhead a scalable, secure, cloud-alignedsolution leveraging modern Microsoft technologies.
This is a highly visible, strategic role requiring both deeplegacy experience and modern architecture vision.
Key Responsibilities
Knowledge Transition & Legacy Support
Lead structured KT sessions with outgoing architect
Reverse engineer and document VBScript/MS Access-based applications
Understand business workflows, data flows, integrations, and reporting mechanisms
Stabilize and support production systems
Implement incremental improvements for reliability and maintainability
Serve as primary technical owner post-transition
Architecture & Modernization Leadership
Define target-state architecture for modernized platform
Evaluate re-platform vs. re-architect vs. rebuild strategies
Develop phased modernization roadmap
Collaborate with Microsoft Practice SMEs (Azure, .NET, Power Platform, Data)
Present architectural strategy to client stakeholders
Drive POCs and pilot implementations
Lead migration to scalable, secure, cloud-native or hybrid solutions
Governance & Best Practices
Ensure adherence to architecture standards and SDLC processes
Establish documentation standards and architecture artifacts
Define data governance, security, and compliance considerations
Mentor engineers during modernization effort
Required Technical Skills
Legacy Expertise
Strong experience with:
VBScript
Microsoft Access (forms, reports, macros, VBA, backend architecture)
Experience supporting legacy Windows-based business applications
Experience reverse-engineering undocumented systems
Strong troubleshooting and performance optimization skills
Microsoft Modern Stack Experience
.NET / C# (preferred modernization path)
ASP.NET / .NET Core
Azure services (App Services, Azure SQL, Storage, Functions, etc.)
SQL Server
REST API design and integration
Familiarity with Power Platform (Power Apps, Power Automate) is a plus
Experience migrating Access-based systems to modern architectures
Architecture & Strategy
Experience as a Solution Architect or Lead Architect
Strong system design and documentation capabilities
Cloud architecture experience (Azure preferred)
Ability to evaluate build vs. buy decisions
Experience leading modernization initiatives
Required Experience
10+ years in application development and architecture
5+ years in solution architecture roles
Proven experience transitioning ownership of legacy systems
Experience leading modernization or digital transformation projects
