2027 Process Engineering Internship - ATI Specialty Materials

Locations: Monroe, NC

Program Duration: 10 Weeks | Summer 2027

Target Students: Materials Science, Chemical Engineering, or Mechanical Engineering

Turn Materials Science Into Manufacturing Impact - Intern in Process Engineering at ATI

A

At ATI, we engineer specialty materials that power the next generation of aircraft, spacecraft, surgical implants, and energy systems. As a VIM Process Engineering Intern, you'll work directly with Operations and Engineering teams in ATI's Vacuum Induction Melting (VIM) area to improve process consistency, quality, and furnace performance. You'll apply your engineering and materials science knowledge to hands-on projects involving nickel melting technologies, process optimization, and furnace operations.

What You'll Work On

Depending on your project assignment, you may:
  • Partner with the Operations team to create visual standards for quality metrics on the VIM shop floor.
  • Update the VIM Can-Up MIS to optimize the sequence of elemental additions using thermodynamic and chemical modeling.
  • Conduct refractory trials for new suppliers and document VIM furnace liner health to support furnace performance and reliability.
  • Analyze process information to identify opportunities to improve melt quality and consistency.
  • Support the development and documentation of standard operating procedures for VIM processes.
  • Partner with Operations and Engineering teams to investigate process conditions and develop practical solutions.

What You'll Gain

  1. Hands-on experience with Vacuum Induction Melting (VIM) and nickel melting technologies.
  2. Practical experience applying materials science principles, thermodynamic concepts, and chemical modeling to manufacturing processes.
  3. Experience with data analysis, process optimization, and problem solving in a production environment.
  4. Exposure to refractory materials, furnace liner health, and furnace performance.
  5. Experience developing visual standards and standard operating procedures that improve quality consistency and execution.
  6. Opportunities to work directly with Operations and Engineering teams on projects that deliver measurable impact to the VIM area.
  7. Experience conducting investigative failure analysis and process improvement in a manufacturing environment.
  8. Potential opportunity to transition into a full-time Process Engineer position at ATI after graduation.

Preferred Qualifications
  • B.S. or Graduate candidate in:
    • Materials Science & Engineering
    • Mechanical Engineering
    • Metallurgical Engineering
    • Industrial or Manufacturing Engineering
  • GPA of 3.0+ (preferred)
  • Strong interest in thermo-mechanical processing of metals
  • Familiarity with:
    • Excel, Python, or Minitab/JMP for data analysis
    • Stress-strain behavior, microstructure-property relationships, and process modeling
  • Ability to work in plant and shop-floor environments

We thrive when the expectations are great, and the barriers are high. We're solving the world's most difficult challenges through materials science. Our advanced, integrated process technologies and proven performers give us a tremendous competitive advantage. When customers systems need to fly higher, dig deeper, stand stronger, and last longer -- anywhere on, above or below the earth -- ATI is proven to perform.
