Senior Swift Engineer – macOS AI Platform (Contract)
Location: Fully Remote
Duration: 3-month W2 contract (with potential extension)
Pay Rate: $100–$123/hour (depending on experience)
Company: Russell Tobin (supporting a leading enterprise technology client)
About the Role
Russell Tobin is supporting a cutting-edge technology client building a native macOS application that delivers AI-powered data insights for business users.
This is a systems-level engineering role working across AI runtime, platform integrations, deterministic data execution, and adaptive macOS UI. The product is built on a multi-stage pipeline architecture that transforms natural language into verified, traceable outputs.
You’ll join a small, senior team where engineers own meaningful technical surfaces and ship high-quality macOS desktop software.
What You’ll Do
- Own key components within a native AI pipeline: runtime/orchestration, platform integrations, deterministic execution, or UI
- Design and build production-grade Swift code within a layered Swift Package Manager (SPM) architecture (20+ modules)
- Develop AI orchestration systems including structured outputs, routing, tool calling, and context management
- Build platform integrations (enterprise data access, identity, sandboxing, connectors)
- Implement deterministic data execution (joins, aggregations, ranking, filtering) with traceability
- Create adaptive macOS UI using SwiftUI with AppKit interop (desktop workflows, streaming updates, accessibility)
- Write and maintain automated tests using XCTest and Swift Testing
- Apply Swift 6 concurrency best practices (actors, Sendable, async/await)
Required Qualifications
- 5+ years of professional software engineering experience with Swift
- Proven experience shipping native macOS desktop applications (not iOS-only)
- Strong knowledge of Swift concurrency (actors, async/await, structured concurrency)
- Experience with modular SPM architectures and strict dependency management
- Familiarity with protocol-oriented design and dependency injection
- Experience working with strict linting, pre-commit hooks, and CI workflows
Preferred Experience
- AI/LLM integration (structured outputs, tool calling, streaming inference)
- ML inference frameworks and model orchestration
- Prompt design, token management, and multi-stage pipelines
- Evaluation of non-deterministic AI outputs
- macOS platform services (sandboxing, entitlements, code signing, packaging)
- Data processing in Swift (TabularData, query systems, ranking/filtering)
- SwiftUI + AppKit production apps with complex desktop UX patterns
- Performance optimization and accessibility best practices
