Summary

About the team

Stevens builds software for clients through small delivery pods that bring engineers and delivery leadership together around a defined engagement. Each pod works closely with the client to understand the problem, establish priorities, and deliver software that supports their business.

Our work connects technical decisions to practical outcomes. That means understanding how a client operates, navigating existing systems, and building solutions that people can use and maintain. We value engineers who contribute to both the implementation and the thinking behind it.

About the role

We’re looking for a Senior Full Stack Engineer with strong JavaScript proficiency and at least five years of professional software engineering experience to join a client delivery pod.

You’ll work across interfaces, services, databases, and integrations, owning features from early requirements through production release. Alongside your delivery lead and fellow engineers, you’ll help determine how work should be approached, identify technical risks, and make decisions that balance immediate delivery needs with the long-term health of the application.

This is a hands-on role with meaningful responsibility for the outcome. You might spend part of your day clarifying a workflow with a client, another part implementing a feature, and another reviewing a teammate’s approach. You should be comfortable moving between those conversations and using what you learn to improve the work.

In this role, you will

  • Own full stack features from requirements clarification and technical design through implementation, testing, and release.

  • Build interfaces and backend services using JavaScript, Node.js, and the engagement’s selected frontend framework.

  • Develop APIs, database models, and integrations that support the client’s workflows.

  • Work with your pod to turn priorities into scoped tasks with clear acceptance criteria, dependencies, and estimates.

  • Help shape technical decisions, explaining tradeoffs around security, reliability, performance, and maintainability.

  • Participate in client discussions and demonstrations, making technical concepts understandable and incorporating feedback into delivery.

  • Improve implementation quality through code reviews, automated testing, and practical guidance to other engineers.

  • Investigate defects, support releases, and document the decisions and context needed for effective maintenance and handoff.

  • Communicate progress and surface changes in scope, assumptions, or timing early.

You’ll bring

  • Five or more years of professional software engineering experience, including substantial work on production web applications.

  • Strong JavaScript fundamentals, including asynchronous programming, promises, modules, and error handling.

  • Experience with a modern frontend framework such as React, Vue, or Angular, and backend development with Node.js.

  • Experience designing and integrating APIs, including authentication, authorization, validation, and failure handling.

  • Practical knowledge of relational or document databases, data modeling, and query performance.

  • A track record of taking complex features from an incomplete requirement to a tested, working release.

  • Sound technical judgment and the ability to understand an existing codebase before proposing changes.

  • Experience with Git, code review, automated testing, and deployment workflows.

  • Clear communication with engineers, delivery leads, and nontechnical stakeholders.

Experience in consulting or client delivery is helpful, as is experience with TypeScript, cloud platforms, CI/CD, accessibility, and application security.

How we work

You’ll have ownership of your work and the support of a pod that shares context, reviews decisions, and coordinates delivery. We expect you to ask questions, contribute your perspective, and help the team make progress when the path is unclear.

Client trust matters. We build it through realistic commitments, visible progress, thoughtful handling of feedback, and early communication when something changes. Senior engineers play an important part in that relationship by connecting technical detail to its effect on the engagement.

We use approved AI-assisted development tools where they improve delivery. You remain responsible for understanding and verifying the resulting code, protecting client information, and following the engagement’s security and tool-use requirements.

Engagement and compensation

This is a 1099 independent contractor engagement supporting a Stevens client delivery pod. It is open only to contractors who reside and perform their work in the United States throughout the engagement.

  • Expected availability: 30-40 hours per week.

  • Initial engagement: 4 weeks.

Contractors record hours worked in Stevens’ designated time-tracking system against the appropriate client engagement and project activities. Payments are processed every two weeks through our contractor payroll platform.

The contractor agreement will define the scope and engagement terms. Onboarding will include access requirements, time-entry instructions, and the payment schedule.

Interview process

We begin with a 25-minute introductory conversation on Zoom to discuss your experience, approach to client delivery, and engagement fit.

Next is a technical assessment through HackerRank. We’ll provide the time limit, deadline, and permitted-tool guidelines before you begin.

The final step is a 30-minute Zoom conversation about your assessment decisions, engineering judgment, and how you would contribute within the pod.

Selected candidates will also be required to complete a criminal background screening and identity verification as part of the engagement process. We’ll provide instructions and obtain any required authorization before initiating screening.

Applying

Submit your application through this posting. Please keep all outreach within the recruiting process. Do not contact Stevens team members or clients through personal or work email, LinkedIn, phone, text, or other channels to submit an application, request an update, or seek an interview. Applications sent directly to team members will not be reviewed through those channels, and direct outreach will not advance your application.

Once our recruiting team contacts you, use that email thread for questions and follow-up.
