Telecommunications Wiring Technician

Position Summary
The Telecommunications Wiring Technician will install, maintain, troubleshoot, and repair telephone, voice, and data cabling and telecommunications equipment at commercial facilities, offices, hospitals, and other customer locations. This position requires hands-on experience working in telecommunications closets, MDF/IDF rooms, and end-user work areas, as well as experience supporting legacy PBX and IP/VoIP telephone systems.

Responsibilities

  • Travel to customer sites to install, test, maintain, and repair telephone, voice, and data cabling.
  • Install and support CAT3, CAT5/CAT5e, and CAT6 cabling between telecommunications closets, workstations, telephone jacks, and equipment locations.
  • Work in MDF/IDF and telecommunications closets to identify, trace, connect, and patch telephone and network cabling.
  • Patch appropriate phone cables from patch panels to network switches to provide connectivity for IP/VoIP phones.
  • Connect wall jacks and telephone extensions to PBX services and other telecommunications equipment.
  • Run telephone and data cabling into and out of telecommunications closets from offices, wall jacks, workstations, employee desks, and other building locations.
  • Perform punch-downs and terminate wiring on 66 blocks, 110 blocks, patch panels, jacks, and wall plates.
  • Install and support legacy PBX and IP/VoIP telephone systems, including telephone installations and moves, adds, and changes (MACs).
  • Move telephone extensions and services between offices and workstations while maintaining proper connectivity.
  • Troubleshoot issues including no dial tone, dead phone jacks, faulty cabling, bad connections, incorrect extensions, and IP/VoIP connectivity problems.
  • Use cable testers, tone generators and probes, multimeters, and other telecommunications test equipment to identify wiring faults and verify connectivity.
  • Trace cables and circuits between telecommunications closets, patch panels, PBX equipment, network switches, wall jacks, and end-user locations.
  • Use punch-down tools, crimpers, cable strippers, termination tools, and other hand tools to install and repair telecommunications cabling.
  • Label cables, jacks, ports, patch panels, and circuits and maintain accurate documentation of cable locations and connections.
  • Maintain clean and organized telecommunications closets and ensure cabling is properly routed, secured, and labeled.
  • Coordinate with network, telecommunications, desktop support, and other technical teams to resolve telephone and connectivity issues.

Qualifications

  • Hands-on experience installing, terminating, testing, troubleshooting, and repairing telephone and data cabling.
  • Experience with CAT3, CAT5/CAT5e, and CAT6 cabling.
  • Experience working in MDF/IDF rooms and telecommunications closets.
  • Experience terminating wiring on 66/110 blocks, patch panels, wall jacks, and related telecommunications equipment.
  • Experience supporting legacy PBX and IP/VoIP telephone systems.
  • Knowledge of telephone wiring, extensions, dial tone troubleshooting, and moves/adds/changes.
  • Ability to use telecommunications testing and termination tools (punch-down, crimping, etc.) to trace and troubleshoot cabling from the telecommunications closet to the end-user location.
  • Ability to read cable labels, wiring diagrams, port assignments, and telecommunications documentation.
  • Ability to travel to multiple customer locations and work independently in commercial and institutional environments, including hospitals and correctional facilities.
  • Strong troubleshooting, documentation, communication, and customer-service skills.
  • RI Telecommunications Technician license (or equivalent) preferred
