Location: Durham, North Carolina (Remote)
Duration: 6 Month Contract to Hire
Role Overview
We are seeking a Senior Software Engineer to support a core monolithic system that orchestrates lab order intake, processing, and interpretation. This role requires an individual who can take ambiguous, complex problems and drive them to completion. The successful candidate will act as a technical leader, mentoring other engineers and raising the bar for the team in architecture and execution, with a heavy focus on integration work connecting internal systems with lab pipelines.
Key Responsibilities
- Own and deliver projects across product, platform, and stakeholder teams.
- Design, develop, and maintain a central, monolithic system built on Python and Django.
- Develop and enhance system integrations and core platform functionality with a strong emphasis on API-driven architecture.
- Perform foundational engineering work focused on system improvements, stability, and modernization.
- Provide production support, including participating in an on-call rotation and troubleshooting bugs.
- Mentor teammates and elevate the team's technical execution standards.
- Communicate clearly with both technical and non-technical audiences.
Required Qualifications
Experience: A minimum of 7+ years of professional software engineering experience is required. Candidates must demonstrate strong experience in system design, development, and real-world application architecture.
Technical Skills: Proficiency in Python and Django is mandatory. Candidates must have full-stack experience with a strong backend emphasis, including heavy API development and experience with TypeScript and MySQL.
Education: A formal degree is not required. Experience and technical skill are prioritized.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience in healthcare technology, clinical laboratory, or genomics industries.
- Knowledge of AWS-native environments and cloud platforms.
- Familiarity with containerization, Kubernetes, or infrastructure-as-code tools like Terraform.
- Experience designing and maintaining API platforms that serve multiple internal consumers.
- Familiarity with AI development tools such as Claude or Codex.
Work Environment
This is a fully remote position. The team is collaborative and engineers are expected to contribute ideas and participate in design decisions. The team is globally distributed across multiple time zones.
