Description

This position offers an exciting and challenging opportunity to support NASA's Artemis program. As the Extravehicular Activity and Human Surface Mobility (EHP) S&MA Integration/Ops engineer, you will provide technical integration for exploration EHP systems and operational support, ensuring safety requirements are consistently applied, verified, and maintained across HLS, MPH, LTV, Pressurized Rover, Orion, other lunar surface assets, and EHP Safety MER operations. You will be responsible for assuring the integrated mission design, hazards, proposed operations, and verifications comply with all applicable Safety and Mission Assurance (S&MA) requirements. These functions are performed in direct support of NASA JSC EHP Office, the xEVAS vendor Project Team, and the applicable support disciplines of the Lunar program offices.

EHP S&MA Integration/Ops engineers are expected to become familiar with the proposed requirements and operational scenarios associated with xEVAS Spacesuit integrated activities for the Lunar lander vehicle, and for Lunar surface habitation and operations. This will include assurance of preliminary safety requirements and hazard/risk assessments and representing the safety position or informing the SMA Representative of the safety position at various SMA, EHP boards and panels. EHP S&MA Integration/Ops engineers are expected to function as an integral member of the NASA EHP team, safety, and operations communities. In addition, the operational support of this position, consists of providing real-time SMA representation on the MMC flight control console during EVA and HSM operations through identifying and assessing hazards related to crew health and human performance, environmental conditions, monitoring safety-critical systems, hazard controls, consumables, timelines, and crew workload; and working very closely with the NASA Team Management, inform MER Manager & Mission Management on Risks encountered during Lunar Surface Operations

Job Duties:
  • Cross-Program Integration: Act as the hub connecting EHP systems (suits, tools, payloads, etc.) with HLS landers, LTV, Pressurized Rover, and Orion.
  • Supports Systems Requirement Review, Preliminary and Critical Design Reviews of EHP systems hardware, provide engineering evaluations against design and safety requirements.
  • Review Safety Data Packages and design reviews; track safety impacts through EHP processes and program control boards.
  • Hazard Analysis & Risk Management: Analyze EVA hazards at the integrated level.
  • Verification & Validation: Support Verification Event Reviews, EHP RWG (V&V), and test campaigns to confirm EHP safety compliance.
  • Variance Tracking: Track all variances/deviations across programs, analyze EHP safety impacts, present findings to ESMACB for awareness and decision-making, and monitor final implementation with hazard reports.
  • Operational Readiness & MER Transition: Build the path from integration to real-time EHP safety support in MER: procedures, timelines, contingency operations, and mission risk posture.


Qualifications

Required Education:

  • Bachelor's in mechanical, Aerospace, Safety Engineering, or related discipline.

  • Excellent interpersonal, written, and verbal communications skills.

  • Ability to work autonomously, with minimal management oversight, to prioritize work and accomplish tasks within tight schedule constraints.
  • Ability to visualize, articulate, and condense complex issues into concise, easily understood presentations.
  • Ability to generate high quality written technical reports and prepare and give high quality technical presentations for senior management and the customer.
