Position Overview:

The Computing Division at SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory is seeking a Data Center Specialist to join our Data Center Team. As a member of the Data Center Operations, you will be responsible for installing, monitoring, maintaining, and troubleshooting information technology systems, including contributing to and enhancing SLAC s data center operations.

The ideal candidate:
  • Has a broad interest in IT as a whole.
  • Can and will transform the data center and its processes.
  • Will take ownership of initiatives and drive them to successful completion.
To be effective, you must leverage knowledge and experience in data center capacity planning and management (space, power, and cooling) and support existing and future data center modernization strategies and activities. In addition, this position requires comprehensive knowledge of information technology and systems and the ability to troubleshoot and resolve technical issues and escalations that could impact the data center's operation while maintaining high-quality assurance. The Data Center Specialist will report to the SLAC IT Data Center Manager.

Your specific responsibilities include:
  • Under general supervision, provide technical support by installing, maintaining, and troubleshooting data center hardware and assist with network-related problems.
  • Diagnose and resolve data center IT and infrastructure problems by monitoring ticket queues and responding to customer tickets, handling escalated issues by performing triage, and providing remote assistance to end-users.
  • Responsible for data center monitoring and responding to incidents that may impact data center infrastructure and supporting systems.
  • Participate in data center design specifications and requirements by analyzing and contributing to data center design standards, and other related criteria.
  • Contribute to data center improvements and enhancements and recommend appropriate data center technical solutions.
  • Work on projects requiring data center expertise and creativity in analysis and deployment of technology.
  • Maintain data center infrastructure management (DCIM) application by supporting data center asset management and lifecycle efforts.
  • Develop and document capacity reports, usage, availability, and future capacity forecasts.
  • Recommend and assist in the development of data center processes and procedures.
  • On a needed basis, participate in on-call support and drive the resolution of data center incidents in a timely manner.
  • Coordinate and perform routine data center audits and walkthroughs.
  • To maintain continuous operational support, perform ongoing data center activities designated by management.
To be successful in this position you will bring:

  • Two-year college degree and two or more years of relevant experience or a combination of education and relevant experience.
  • Relevant mission-critical data center experience and familiarity with various IT hardware and supporting infrastructure (servers, cables, power systems, cooling equipment, etc.).
  • Thorough knowledge in supporting data center migrations, site expansions, consolidations, and upgrades initiatives.
  • Ability to apply diagnostic techniques for troubleshooting compute, storage, and network problems.
  • Practical understanding of Data Center Infrastructure Management (DCIM) and Dell OpenManage applications.
  • General working knowledge of Windows and Linux operating systems and networking concepts to assist with system administration tasks.
  • General working skills of scripting to assist in developing automation tasks.
  • Strong capabilities in the following: developing technical documentation and process flowcharting, presentation of options and solutions facilitation, issues analysis and resolution, and business process improvement.
  • Ability to work effectively with the entire Microsoft Office Suite, ServiceNow, Atlassian Confluence, and Google Sheets.
  • Reliable verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to provide excellent client service.
  • Ability to apply information technology best practices, including security (this includes information security or physical security, such as asset management) to problem resolution and troubleshooting.
In addition, preferred requirements include:
  • Certifications in A+, Server+, Linux+, or comparable data center certification(s).
  • Data center infrastructure management experience.
  • Data center lifecycle and asset management experience.
  • Data center network cabling experience.

To obtain this credential, employees must successfully complete the applicable tier of federal background investigation post hire and receive a favorable federal adjudication. The tier of federal background investigation will be determined by job duties and national security or public trust responsibilities associated with the job. All tiers of investigation include a declaration of illegal drug activities, including use, supply, possession, or manufacture within the last 1 to 7 years (depending on the applicable tier of investigation). Illegal drug activities include marijuana and cannabis derivatives, which are still considered illegal under federal law, regardless of state laws.

The expected pay range for this position is $110,123 - $129,926 per annum

SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory/Stanford University provides pay ranges representing its good faith estimate of the salary or hourly wage the university reasonably expects to pay for a position upon hire. The pay offered to a selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as (but not limited to) the scope and responsibilities of the position, the qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget availability, internal equity, geographic location, and external market pay for comparable jobs.
