IBM MQ Engineer (z/OS / Mainframe)

Job Title: IBM MQ Engineer z/OS & IBMi (Mainframe MQ Support) Location: 100% Remote Duration: 12 Months
Role Overview:

We are seeking a highly skilled IBM MQ Engineer with strong expertise in z/OS and IBMi environments to support enterprise messaging infrastructure. This role involves hands-on MQ administration, monitoring, troubleshooting, and performance tuning across mainframe and distributed systems.

The ideal candidate will have deep knowledge of MQ architecture, strong problem-solving skills, and experience working in high-availability, secure environments, including regulated (FISMA) setups.

Administer IBM MQ on z/OS & IBMi (QMGRs, queues, channels)

Monitor performance, troubleshoot issues, and support capacity planning

Manage incidents, changes, and events following ITIL practices

Configure MQ alerting, automation, and monitoring tools

Support MQ upgrades, deployments, and lifecycle activities

Work with QSGs, Coupling Facilities, SMDS, and shared queues

Manage integrations with CICS, IMS, MQIPT, and clustering

Handle MQ logging, performance tuning, and SMF analysis

Use tools like Prometheus, Grafana, Splunk, Ironstream

Support DR/HA setups and vendor coordination

Maintain documentation and participate in on-call support

Minimum 5+ years of experience in IBM MQ support

Strong hands-on experience with MQ on z/OS

Solid understanding of MQ architecture and APIs

Experience with CICS, IMS, DB2, TCP/IP, and mainframe automation (OPS/MVS)

Experience with MQ monitoring, alerting, and dashboarding tools

Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills

Experience with MQ logging and performance tuning

Excellent communication, documentation, and collaboration skills

Experience with MQ on IBMi (AS/400)

Knowledge of MQIPT on distributed platforms

Exposure to IBM Cloud Pak for Integration (CP4I) and containerization

Experience with FISMA-compliant environments (secure government setups)

Knowledge of networking, firewalls, SSL, and F5 configurations

Experience with Queue Streaming and message replication strategies

Familiarity with CapEx or message handling strategies for stale/orphan messages
