Chief Engineer - JLL

What this job involves: As a Chief Engineer at JLL, you will be responsible for the operational management and effective daily leadership and administration of the engineering team with the objectives of safely, efficiently, and effectively operating machinery and systems in a cost-effective manner. You must ensure the highest level of professionalism while meeting clients' needs and maintaining a commitment to achieving the goal of 100% uptime throughout the engineering team. You'll be responsible for protecting and improving the value of client's assets while ensuring that building engineering systems continue to perform their intended function. You will implement and manage the reliability-based maintenance function, execute equipment inspection and monitoring programs, define and implement maintenance best practices to improve overall mechanical equipment uptime, and continuously evaluate current maintenance, operations, and reliability methods to enhance effectiveness at increasing value-maximizing performance.

What your day-to-day will look like:

Building Management:

Monitor operation and maintain refrigeration, water cooling and air conditioning equipment for optimal facility performance

Oversee boilers, heating, ventilating and hot water equipment while ensuring efficient system operation

Manage pumps, valves, piping and filters along with other mechanical and electrical equipment

Review logs as necessary to assure proper operation of equipment while reporting problems/malfunctions on as-needed basis

Perform preventive tasks when required while overseeing repair and P.M. of HVAC systems

Determine frequency of repair and/or P.M. for HVAC systems based on equipment condition and operational requirements

Ensure availability of adequate inventory of tools and other supplies to operate building effectively

Prepare and submit purchase order requests while developing sources for stock materials

Perform periodic checks of inventory levels and equipment conditions for continuous operational readiness

Oversee activities of contractors working within building as representatives of building or tenants

Safety Management:

Identify safety hazards within building while incorporating remediation to ensure staff and occupants work in safe environment

Implement, administer, and manage comprehensive safety training program for all engineering staff

Ensure compliance of all regulatory laws and guidelines as they relate to operation of building's infrastructure

Alert management of building discrepancies and regulatory compliance issues promptly

Maintain all infrastructure and compliance documentation for building including up-to-date building drawings and single-lines

Maintain documentation mandated for regulatory compliance with Federal, State, or Local law

Leadership and Management:

Supervise and manage engineers and maintenance staff including hiring, training, and personal development

Ensure Critical Facility Work Authorization (CFWA) is well-understood process among building staff, engineers, tenants, and contractors

Lead engineering team to achieve operational excellence and client satisfaction goals consistently

Develop and implement policies and procedures for effective team management and operational efficiency

Foster culture of safety, professionalism, and continuous improvement within engineering team

Training and Development:

Provide training and support aimed at expanding capabilities of operations staff through comprehensive development programs

Demonstrate proper use and care of tools and instruments for effective equipment management

Give hands-on instruction in basic maintenance, safety, and troubleshooting procedures

Recommend relevant outside engineering courses for enrollment to enhance team capabilities

Instill overall level of professionalism in manner and appearance throughout engineering team

Reliability and Maintenance Excellence:

Implement and manage reliability-based maintenance function for optimal equipment performance

Execute equipment inspection and monitoring programs to prevent failures and extend asset life

Define and implement maintenance best practices to improve overall mechanical equipment uptime

Continuously evaluate current maintenance, operations, and reliability methods for effectiveness enhancement

Develop comprehensive preventive maintenance programs for all building systems

Required Qualifications:

Education and Experience: Associate Degree in engineering discipline or equivalent work experience required

7+ years facility related work experience including customer service, leadership, and supervisory experience

Managerial experience required for effective team leadership and operational management

Technical Knowledge and Skills: Comprehensive knowledge of maintenance processes and facility operations management

Understanding of construction planning and execution for facility improvement projects

Exposure to HVAC, fluid handling/pumping, fluid filtering, mechanical systems, welding, and electrical systems engineering and operation

Working knowledge of computer applications including Microsoft Office and CMMS systems

Certifications and Licenses: Certification as Universal Technician for CFCs required (or within 90 days of employment)

Operating Engineers license (SMA) or equivalent preferred

Professional Skills: Demonstrated verbal/written communication skills for effective stakeholder interaction

Proven record of excellent internal and external customer service

Strong leadership and supervisory capabilities for managing diverse engineering teams

Problem-solving skills for complex facility operations and maintenance challenges

Management Scope: Small team, single function management responsibility

Expense management responsibility for facility operations budget

Physical and Availability Requirements: Ability to work in various facility environments including mechanical rooms and equipment areas

Flexibility to respond to emergency situations and after-hours calls as required

Physical capability to inspect equipment and perform hands-on maintenance oversight

Professional appearance and demeanor appropriate for client-facing interactions

Preferred Qualifications:

Bachelor's degree in Engineering or related technical field

Experience with building automation systems and energy management

Knowledge of regulatory compliance requirements for commercial facilities

Certification in project management or facilities management
