Job Summary:
The CNC Programmer develops, optimizes, and validates CNC programs that turn engineering designs into precision-machined parts for company's aerospace, defense, space, automotive, and energy customers. Working primarily in Esprit, Edgecam, and Catia, this role translates technical drawings and 3D models into efficient, repeatable tool paths, designs and programs tooling and workholding, and partners closely with machinists and quality inspectors to ensure every part meets specification on the first pass.

The CNC Programmer is also expected to support company's Mission, Vision, and Core Values in everyday work, applying disciplined process control and continuous improvement to every program released to the shop floor.

Key Responsibilities
CAD/CAM Programming & Toolpath Development
  • Develop and optimize CNC programs using Esprit, Edgecam, and Catia (experience with Mastercam or SolidWorks a plus) to machine precision parts to technical drawings, specifications, and customer requirements.
  • Import and translate 3D CAD models from CAD into CAM toolpaths in Esprit and Edgecam, selecting appropriate cutting strategies, feeds, speeds, and tooling for each operation.
  • Design and program tooling, fixtures, and workholding solutions to support efficient, repeatable setups.
  • Generate and verify post-processed G-code/M-code for CNC lathes, mills, and multi-axis (3-, 4-, and 5-axis) machining centers.
  • Optimize tool paths and machining sequences to reduce cycle time, minimize tool wear, and eliminate scrap.
Machine Setup & Shop Floor Support
  • Collaborate with machinists to set up CNC machines and validate first-article programs at the machine before full production runs.
  • Troubleshoot ongoing program, tooling, and machine performance issues on the shop floor in real time.
  • Read and interpret engineering drawings, 3D models annotation, GD&T callouts, technical documentation, and specifications to confirm part requirements and tolerances.
  • Verify the accuracy and quality of machined parts through in-process measurement and inspection, coordinating with Quality on first article inspections (FAI/AS9102).
Engineering & Process Support
  • Support engineering with tooling design, fixture design, and process documentation for new and existing programs.
  • Partner with engineers, production, and quality teams to resolve design and/or manufacturability issues and meet production goals.
  • Maintain accurate program revisions in coordination with Document Control so the shop floor only has access to current, approved program.
  • Recommend and support continuous improvement initiatives that increase throughput and part quality.

Education & Experience
  • Diploma or certification in CNC Programming, Machining, or a related field required.
  • A bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering or manufacturing engineering is a plus.
  • 3+ years of CNC programming experience in a precision manufacturing environment required; aerospace or defense machining experience strongly preferred.
  • Multi-axis mill/lathe programming experience required.
  • Solid understanding of post processors and G-code/M-code required.
  • Experience operating within an AS9100 or ISO 9001 certified quality system required.

Technical Skills & Core Competencies
  • Proficient in Esprit, Edgecam, and Catia as primary CAD/CAM programming platforms; experience with Mastercam, SolidWorks, and NX is a plus.
  • Strong understanding of machining processes, materials, tooling, and multi-axis mill/lathe operations.
  • Working knowledge of GD&T, blueprint reading, and manufacturing documentation such as routers, work instructions, and BOMs.
  • Ability to apply geometry and trigonometry to part programming and setup calculations.

Core Competencies
  • Detail-oriented, with the ability to create and verify accurate, repeatable programs.
  • Strong analytical and troubleshooting skills for resolving program, tooling, and machine issues.
  • Clear verbal and written communication with machinists, engineers, and quality teams.
  • Ability to manage multiple programs and priorities in a fast-paced production environment.

Work Environment & Physical Requirements
  • Primarily a shop-floor and engineering office environment, moving frequently between the programming workstation and the production floor.
  • Ability to move throughout the facility, including up and down stairs, and safely navigate a production floor environment, including wearing required PPE.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs.
  • Ability to visually read hard-copy and digital customer/engineering specifications and part prints.
