Data & Business Taxonomy Lead plays a strategic role in shaping and governing the enterprise information landscape. This role is responsible for defining, operationalizing, and sustaining business taxonomies, data standards, and metadata structures that ensure consistency, quality, and usability of data across the organization. The lead will partner closely with Regulatory Affairs (RA), Research & Development (R&D), Quality, Supply Chain, Commercial and Digital teams to ensure data is organized, governed, and leveraged as a strategic asset.
This role drives alignment of business terminology, regulatory classifications, and data structures to enable trusted analytics, compliance, and digital transformation. It promotes data literacy, fosters cross?functional collaboration, and supports enterprise data governance initiatives.
Key Responsibilities 1. Business Taxonomy Leadership - Own the design, development, and maintenance of enterprise?wide business taxonomies, controlled vocabularies, and metadata standards.
- Translate complex business, regulatory, and technical requirements into structured, scalable taxonomy models.
- Partner with subject matter experts to harmonize terminology across functions, regions, and systems.
2. Data Governance & Standards - Serve as the taxonomy representative within the Data Office, ensuring alignment to enterprise data governance policies and frameworks.
- Establish and enforce metadata standards, naming conventions, and classification models across RA, R&D, and related domains.
- Ensure taxonomies support regulatory needs, including EU MDR, EUDAMED, UDI/GUDID, and privacy requirements (GDPR, HIPAA).
3. Data Quality & Stewardship - Collaborate with data stewards to define data quality rules, validation processes, and lineage requirements tied to taxonomy structures.
- Monitor taxonomy adoption and drive remediation for inconsistencies, duplication, or gaps in metadata.
4. Technology & Architecture Enablement - Partner with enterprise architects and system owners to embed taxonomies into digital platforms, data lakes, master data systems, and analytics tools.
- Support metadata management technologies (e.g., data catalogues, governance platforms) and improve user experience and findability of key data assets.
5. Analytics & Insights Enablement - Ensure taxonomies support advanced analytics, reporting consistency, and semantic interoperability across systems.
- Enable standardized metrics, KPIs, and dashboards through structured and governed business definitions.
6. Change Management & Data Literacy - Develop training, communication, and adoption strategies to promote understanding and correct usage of taxonomies.
- Build relationships with business leaders, SMEs, and functional teams to drive alignment and cultural adoption of data governance practices.
Essential Skills & Experience: - Bachelor's or Master's degree in Life Sciences, Information Management, Data Governance, Regulatory Affairs, Computer Science, or related field.
- Proven experience in data governance, taxonomy design, metadata management, or master data management within a regulated industry (MedTech, Pharma, or Life Sciences).
- Strong understanding of regulatory frameworks (EU MDR, GUDID/UDI, GDPR, HIPAA).
- Hands-on experience with metadata management or data cataloguing tools (e.g., Collibra, Informatica, Alation).
- Demonstrated success in leading cross-functional stakeholders in matrixed organizations.
- Strong analytical, conceptual modelling, and problem?solving skills.
- Excellent communication skills with the ability to translate complex concepts for non?technical audiences
Preferred: - Experience in RA or R&D environments.
- Prior involvement in large-scale digital transformation or enterprise data initiatives.
- Familiarity with data architecture, data warehousing, and BI/analytics tools (Power BI, Tableau, etc.).
- Experience developing taxonomies for regulatory submissions, clinical data, product lifecycle data, or quality systems.
