Summary

Overview

Microsoft is a company where passionate innovators come to collaborate, envision what can be and take their careers to levels they cannot achieve anywhere else. This is a world of more possibilities, more innovation, more openness in a cloud-enabled world. The Business and Industry Copilots group is a rapidly growing organization that is responsible for the Microsoft Dynamics 365 suite of products, Power Apps, Power Automate, Dataverse, AI Builder, Microsoft Industry Solution and more. Microsoft is considered one of the leaders in Software as a Service in the world of business applications and this organization is at the heart of how business applications are designed and delivered.

We are looking for a Principal Software Engineer to join our team.

This is an exciting time to join our group and work on something highly strategic to Microsoft. Microsoft Dataverse and the Power Platform Managed Platform provide secure, scalable, and cost-efficient foundations for building AI-powered, governed, and compliant applications at global scale. This team builds platform capabilities and microservices that deliver global scale, security, governance, and managed runtime for customers across Power Platform. You will be part of a team of engineers who thrive on solving complex problems at scale with impeccable quality.

Managed Platform is the backbone of the Business and Industry Copilots enterprise adoption strategy, focusing on areas including Managed Security, Governance, Operations, and organizational transformation. As a core leadership team of the Managed Security & Governance group you will handle a variety of high impact projects that move our products forward and help lead engineering and cultural transformation to AI-first. Leverage your passion, intensity, and creativity to shape the product platform underpinning the future of enterprises.

Microsoft's mission is to empower every person and every organization on the planet to achieve more. As employees we come together with a growth mindset, innovate to empower others, and collaborate to realize our shared goals. Each day we build on our values of respect, integrity, and accountability to create a culture of inclusion where everyone can thrive at work and beyond.

Responsibilities
  • Push through resistance to new AI-first approaches to building and delivering services.
  • Lead architecture and technical direction for Managed Platform services in Power Platform, with emphasis on global scale, reliability, security, privacy, and cost efficiency.
  • Design and build high-scale, low-latency distributed systems on Linux and Kubernetes using Python and FastAPI (or similar), with solid observability and diagnosability.
  • Drive engineering excellence through robust testing and AI eval strategies, automation, safe deployments, and SLO and SLA adherence across services.
  • Operate live services as a DRI, lead incident response and postmortems, and deliver systemic improvements to reduce incident volume and time to mitigate.
  • Partner across Business and Industry Copilots, Power Platform, and other Microsoft teams to align dependencies, land cohesive customer experiences, and unblock delivery.
  • Mentor and elevate engineers through design reviews, code reviews, and both career and technical coaching while fostering an inclusive, learning-oriented culture.
  • Translate product requirements into elegant and resilient designs that are not overly complicated and iterative roadmaps validated with experimentation, telemetry, and continuous customer feedback.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 6+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python.
    • OR equivalent experience.

Other Requirements: Ability to meet Microsoft, customer and/or government security screening requirements are required for this role. These requirements include but are not limited to the following specialized security screenings:
  • Microsoft Cloud Background Check: This position will be required to pass the Microsoft Cloud background check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Proven experience designing and operating large-scale distributed services, ideally on Linux and Kubernetes, including production operations and on-call responsibilities.
  • Deep proficiency with Python and FastAPI for backend services, including performance optimization, testing, and API design.
  • Experience building or operating platforms at global scale supporting AI-driven workloads and data science pipelines.
  • Solid observability skills including logging, tracing, metrics, dashboards, and data-driven decision making.
  • Experience with security, governance, compliance, and accessibility in enterprise SaaS.
  • Azure cloud hosting experience is a big plus.
  • Experience with container orchestration, experimentation and service shadowing, and safe rollout practices such as feature flags and canary deployments.
  • Experience with stream processing and near real-time analytics, caching, and data partitioning strategies as well as compliance requirements such as GDPR, EUDB, etc.
  • Ability to drive cross-organization alignment with clear written and verbal communication.
  • Passion for mentorship, inclusive collaboration, and continuous improvement.
