Data Engineer - Role Description

Work Environment & Data Landscape

  • Operates within a multi-source, distributed data environment
  • Data originates from:
    • Multiple databases and data warehouses
    • Files and cloud-based storage systems
  • Significant emphasis on data consolidation and transformation
  • Flexibility to define and implement data engineering tools and architecture
  • Exposure to evolving AI/ML use cases requiring structured and reusable datasets

This environment requires working with incomplete or fragmented data ecosystems, with a focus on building scalable and maintainable data structures.

Team Role & Focus

  • Acts as a foundational contributor to AI/ML initiatives by enabling high-quality data access
  • Partners with:
    • Subject Matter Experts (SMEs)
    • Data Scientists
    • Engineering Teams
  • Responsible for shaping how data is structured, stored, and consumed
  • Expected to operate with a high degree of autonomy and technical decision-making

Key Responsibilities

Data Pipeline Development

  • Design and build ETL/ELT pipelines to ingest and process data from multiple sources
  • Integrate structured and unstructured data into centralized datasets
  • Ensure pipelines are scalable, reliable, and maintainable

Data Modeling & Architecture

  • Develop and maintain structured data models tailored to AI/ML use cases
  • Design datasets and data subsets optimized for downstream consumption
  • Build and manage databases supporting analytics and ML workflows

Graph & Knowledge Systems

  • Develop and maintain knowledge graphs and graph-based data structures
  • Build and manage graph databases (e.g., Neo4j) to support knowledge-driven applications
  • Structure relationships across datasets to enable advanced querying and insights

Workflow Orchestration & Data Operations

  • Orchestrate data workflows and pipeline execution
  • Ensure data availability, timeliness, and quality across systems
  • Monitor and improve data reliability and processing efficiency

Collaboration & Data Enablement

  • Work closely with SMEs and data science teams to define data requirements
  • Translate business and analytical needs into structured data solutions
  • Support downstream AI/ML workflows through well-designed data foundations

Required Skills & Experience

  • Strong foundation in data engineering principles and best practices
  • Proven experience designing and implementing ETL/ELT pipelines
  • Expertise in SQL and relational data modeling
  • Experience integrating data from multiple, distributed sources
  • Ability to work independently and make technical design decisions

Preferred Experience

  • Experience with graph databases (Neo4j strongly preferred)
  • Knowledge of knowledge graph or knowledge base development
  • Familiarity with workflow orchestration tools (e.g., Apache Airflow or similar)
  • Experience supporting AI/ML data use cases

Future / Optional Exposure

  • Healthcare data standards (e.g., HL7, FHIR) may become relevant but are not required initially

Technologies & Tools (Environment Exposure)

  • Graph databases: Neo4j
  • SQL-based systems and relational databases
  • Workflow orchestration tools (e.g., Airflow)
  • Cloud platforms (Azure preferred)
  • Python ecosystem (optional but beneficial)

Candidate Profile

  • Mid to sr -level Data Engineer
  • Strong independent contributor with hands-on experience
  • Comfortable working with fragmented or evolving data environments
  • Able to design and implement scalable data solutions with minimal oversight

Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $70.00 - $85.00/hr.
