The department delivers user centered engineering solutions by applying human factors principles, conducting usability research, and integrating human computer interaction best practices into the design and development of software and hardware systems. Its mission is to improve the overall user experience of government facing technologies while ensuring accessibility, safety, and operational efficiency.
Job Responsibility:
- Conduct user research (interviews, surveys, contextual inquiries) to identify needs, pain points, and workflow requirements, emphasizing sound HCE practices toward AI enablement.
- Create low and high-fidelity UI mockups and interactive prototypes using design tools (e.g., Figma, Sketch, Adobe XD).
- (UXE) Develop front-end components and pages (HTML, CSS, JavaScript/React or similar) that implement approved UI/UX designs, ensuring accessibility and performance standards are met.
- Perform usability testing on both prototypes and live front-end implementations; analyze findings and iterate on designs and code.
- Collaborate with engineers, product managers, and stakeholders to translate user insights and design specifications into technical requirements and deliverable code.
Qualifications:
- Sustained excellence in academic performance.
- Must be a student enrolled full-time in an accredited degree-seeking program in (e.g., Human Centered Engineering, UX, Computer Science, etc.) or a related degree and continue to be enrolled full-time the semester following the internship.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Excellent communication skills and the ability to present design concepts to diverse audiences.
- Familiarity with UX design tools (e.g., Figma, Sketch, Adobe XD, or similar) and prototyping methods (UXE - React, Angular, Vue.js, or similar).
- Experience conducting usability studies, user testing, or human factors assessments in academic or project settings (can include Human-Machine Teaming, Human Systems Integration, or similar).
- Demonstrates interest in serving the public.
- Strong teamwork mindset and proven ability to collaborate across multidisciplinary teams.
Clearance: In addition to passing MITRE's employment background check, you may be submitted for a U.S. Government Security clearance. This is determined by the Department of Defense's adjudicative guidelines for receiving a clearance, to include U.S. citizenship. Other jobs may require vetting for various levels of agency public trust, fitness, suitability, controlled access, and special programs access determination consistent with the work program to which you are assigned.
