The Senior Systems Engineer plays a key role in the
engineering, administration, governance, and operational support of Microsoft 365 services. This position is ideal for an experienced engineer who enjoys hands?on technical ownership, complex problem solving, automation, and close partnership with security, compliance, and operations teams.
Hybrid work is supported in designated hub locations to promote collaboration while maintaining flexibility.
Role OverviewThe Senior Systems Engineer is responsible for engineering, supporting, and optimizing Microsoft 365 services, including Teams, SharePoint Online, OneDrive, and Exchange Online. The role also provides advanced operational support for Microsoft Purview capabilities related to data governance, compliance, and information protection.
This position serves as a senior technical escalation point, ensuring platforms remain highly available, secure, compliant, and aligned with enterprise standards and regulatory requirements.
Essential ResponsibilitiesMicrosoft 365 Engineering & Operations- Engineer, configure, and support Microsoft 365 workloads including Teams, SharePoint Online, OneDrive, Exchange Online, and related services
- Manage tenant?level configuration, service settings, policies, and integrations with identity and access controls
- Provide Tier 3 operational support, troubleshooting complex platform issues and performing root cause analysis
- Monitor service health, usage trends, and platform performance, driving continuous operational improvements
- Implement and maintain automation using PowerShell, Microsoft Graph API, and related tooling
- Support platform upgrades, feature releases, and change deployments, including testing and validation
Microsoft Purview & Data Governance Operations- Implement, configure, and support Microsoft Purview capabilities, including:
- Data Loss Prevention (DLP)
- Sensitivity Labels and Information Protection
- Data Lifecycle Management and Retention Policies
- eDiscovery (Standard and Premium)
- Insider Risk Management
- Communication Compliance
- Records Management
- Support enterprise data classification, labeling, and retention initiatives
- Enforce governance controls for Teams, SharePoint, and OneDrive content
- Partner with legal, risk, compliance, and security teams to support audits, investigations, and regulatory requests
- Maintain operational documentation and evidence supporting compliance requirements
Security & Compliance Engineering- Implement Microsoft 365 security controls aligned with Zero Trust principles
- Integrate Microsoft 365 services with identity, security, and endpoint protection platforms
- Assist with compliance assessments and remediation activities
- Maintain configuration documentation and operational runbooks
- Support initiatives to protect the confidentiality, integrity, and availability of enterprise data
Continuous Improvement & Technical Leadership- Contribute to Microsoft 365 and Purview standards, engineering guidelines, and operational best practices
- Evaluate new Microsoft features and support controlled adoption efforts
- Develop usage reporting, operational metrics, and platform health indicators
- Provide mentoring and technical guidance to junior engineers and administrators
- Participate in on?call rotations and after?hours support as required
Minimum Qualifications- Education or experience equivalent to a bachelor’s degree in computer science, engineering, or a related field
- 7+ years of progressive IT experience, including 5+ years supporting Microsoft 365 in an enterprise environment
- Strong hands?on experience with:
- Microsoft Teams, SharePoint Online, and OneDrive
- Microsoft Purview (DLP, eDiscovery, Records Management, Information Protection)
- Microsoft 365 security and compliance features
- Advanced PowerShell scripting experience for automation and administration
- Solid understanding of identity and access management, including Entra ID (Azure AD) and Conditional Access
- Experience supporting regulated or compliance?driven environments
- Strong troubleshooting, analytical, and problem?solving skills
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Ability to work effectively in a fast?paced, enterprise environment
- On?call availability as required
Preferred Qualifications- Microsoft certifications such as:
- Microsoft 365 Enterprise Administrator Expert
- Microsoft Information Protection Administrator (SC?400)
- Microsoft Security, Compliance, and Identity certifications
- Experience with Insider Risk Management and Advanced eDiscovery
- Familiarity with Defender for Cloud Apps and other Microsoft security integrations
- Experience supporting large, multi?geo Microsoft 365 tenants
Work Environment and Physical RequirementsWork is performed in a standard office environment and is primarily sedentary, involving extended computer use.
