Summary

Principal Azure Data Engineer with Healthcare(PHI/HIPAA)

Location: Remote (CST/EST Horus)

Note: Need 14 + years of experience.

Role Overview:

The Principal Data Engineer is a senior individual‑contributor role designed to provide technical leadership without formal people management. This role is critical to shaping the data platform, advancing the Lakehouse architecture, and upleveling engineering practices across the team. This person will be both hands‑on and highly influential—designing and building pipelines while also guiding standards, patterns, and best practices.

Strong Fit Profiles

Has personally built and operated modern data platforms in production
Has implemented Medallion/Lakehouse patterns end‑to‑end
Can mentor and influence other engineers without authority
Comfortable modernizing legacy environments and helping others adapt
Thinks in terms of data products, not just pipelines or tickets

Core Technical Priorities

Candidates should have deep, real‑world experience (not just familiarity) with:

Databricks & Spark

Production pipelines (batch and/or streaming)
Delta Lake, cluster configuration, job orchestration
Performance and cost optimization

Lakehouse / Medallion Architecture

Clear understanding of Bronze → Silver → Gold responsibilities
Particular strength in designing and improving the Silver layer, which is currently the team’s biggest challenge
Data quality, conformance, standardization, and reuse

dbt & Transformation Frameworks

Production use of dbt models, tests, documentation, and CI/CD
Building reusable, governed transformations—not one‑off analytics models

Cloud‑Native Engineering (Azure required)

Comfort owning pieces of the platform (jobs, permissions, orchestration)
DevOps support exists but is tactical, so self‑sufficiency matters

Healthcare & Regulated Data (Strong Preference)

Experience with PHI/HIPAA‑aligned data handling
Epic, EHR, claims, HL7/FHIR exposure is a strong plus
