Summary

Job Summary

General Atomics (GA), and its affiliated companies, is one of the world's leading resources for high-technology systems development ranging from the nuclear fuel cycle to remotely piloted aircraft, airborne sensors, and advanced electric, electronic, wireless and laser technologies.

Engineer I with Machining background

General Atomics is seeking an Engineer I with hands-on machining expertise to optimize manufacturing operations and develop advanced machining processes. This position requires someone who can operate equipment and prototype new methods, maximize underutilized machine capabilities, and implement efficiency improvements. The ideal candidate will use their practical machining experience to bridge the gap between engineering design and manufacturing execution, spending time on the shop floor to develop and validate process improvements rather than routine production work. The components to be machined are typically high-precision, small-quantity parts at the millimeter scale with micro-sized features and tight tolerances.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Identify and develop processes to utilize unused machine capabilities and expand manufacturing capabilities
  • Prototype and validate new machining methods and techniques to improve efficiency and quality
  • Develop optimized tooling strategies, fixtures, and workholding solutions
  • Create and refine NC programs using both manual methods (plain G-code and parametric G-code) and CAD/CAM (Creo) to improve cycle times and part quality
  • Perform hands-on machining to prove out new processes before transitioning to production
  • Review engineering drawings and collaborate with design engineers to improve manufacturability
  • Troubleshoot complex machining challenges and develop solutions
  • Document process improvements, best practices, and standard operating procedures
  • Train production personnel on new processes and techniques
  • Set up and operate micro CNC shop equipment including lathes, mills, and saws
  • Compute angular and linear dimensions for machining operations
  • Determine appropriate cutting tools, workpiece holding methods, and machine speeds and feeds
  • Improvise and adapt standard tooling as needed
  • Perform typical operations including turning, facing, boring, chamfering, turning tapers, drilling, grooving, and reaming
  • Inspect parts using micrometers, calipers, digital height gages, measuring microscopes, indicators, gage blocks, and surface plates
  • Learn and utilize high-level inspection tools such as white light optical profilers
  • Record and document machining data, including both in-process and final inspection results, in the database or designated Excel templates and archive documentation on the server per established procedures
  • Perform preventive maintenance on machines as needed
  • Observe all laws, regulations, and other applicable obligations wherever and whenever business is conducted on behalf of the Company
  • Handle hazardous and radioactive materials in accordance with safety protocols
  • Work in a safe manner in accordance with established operating procedures and practices

We recognize and appreciate the value and contributions of individuals with diverse backgrounds and experiences and welcome all qualified individuals to apply.

Job Qualifications

  • Typically requires a bachelor's degree in engineering or a related technical discipline from an accredited institution. May substitute equivalent engineering experience in lieu of education.
  • Proficiency in operating equipment such as lathes and milling machines
  • Strong understanding of machining principles, cutting tools, and materials
  • Ability to read and interpret complex engineering drawings and specifications
  • Knowledge of geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T)
  • Mathematical skills including geometry and trigonometry
  • Experience with NC programming (both G-code and CAD/CAM/Creo)
  • Proficiency with common manual inspection tools including micrometers, calipers, digital height gages, indicators, gage blocks, and surface plates
  • Ability to learn and perform target characterization using optical microscopes
  • Knowledge of computer operations and applications pertinent to the field
  • Knowledge of inspection equipment and quality control procedures
  • Technical expertise and application of scientific principles, concepts, theory, and practice
  • Ability to organize, plan, schedule, conduct, and coordinate workloads to meet established deadlines or milestones
  • Effective team collaboration skills with the ability to work independently at a high level
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality
  • Experience with process development, method improvement, or manufacturing engineering"
  • Track record of implementing cost savings or efficiency improvements in machining operations
  • Experience developing custom tooling, fixtures, or workholding solutions
  • Familiarity with lean manufacturing principles or continuous improvement methodologies
  • Experience mentoring or training machinists on new techniques
  • Willingness to work with hazardous and radioactive materials
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a DoE Q Level Security clearance

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience machining exotic materials and alloys
  • Familiarity with advanced metrology equipment
  • Previous experience in high-precision manufacturing environments
  • Ability to work comfortably in a manufacturing environment with noise, machinery, and varying temperatures
