Summary

Description This position is responsible for the managerial direction and leadership of the Networks, Integration and Automation (NIA) Department within the Transmission & Distribution (T&D) Global Practice in the North Texas Region (NTR). The NIA Department specializes in network, telecom, integration, and automation systems for electric and gas utilities, including fiber networks, substation communications, and control systems.

This position will provide leadership and direction to grow the department in alignment with Burns & McDonnell's core values of safety, client satisfaction, commitment, dedication, integrity, and outstanding service. Specific areas of responsibility include the following, with other duties as assigned by NTR leadership:

Leadership & Strategy
  • Establish and communicate a clear vision, expectations, and processes to meet department, global practice, and company objectives.
  • Translate business direction into department priorities, operating rhythms, and measurable goals.
  • Lead strategic planning and business development for the NTR NIA Department.
  • Advocate for the department staff to T&D, NTR, and Burns & McDonnell leadership.
  • Offer the team the maximum amount of transparency in processes and decision-making, while remaining accessible and approachable.

Financial Acumen & Operational Performance
  • Drive profitable growth by ensuring staff levels and assignments meet project requirements while maintaining billable goals.
  • Manage the department budget and expenditure of funds.
  • Prepare and present workload and operational reports to leadership, using resource forecasting and workload planning to anticipate constraints and reduce delivery risk.
  • Oversee chargeability and the proper investment of overhead labor and costs within the department.

Talent, Performance, and Culture
  • Actively foster a culture based on our MacCulture principles, quality, diversity and inclusion, and team cohesion.
  • Recruit, develop, train, and retain top-tier staff.
  • Organize and lead the annual performance appraisal process, providing leadership, guidance, and instruction to the team.
  • Continuously educate staff on career paths and facilitate opportunities to meet their goals.
  • Serve as a mentor and coach for department staff.

Collaboration & Client Service
  • Collaborate with business development managers, project managers, and proposal teams to secure work aligned with staff capacity and capability.
  • Ensure adherence to QA/QC processes and drive the continuous improvement of delivery quality.
  • Communicate regularly with NIA Business Line leadership across the T&D global practice regarding staffing, clients, pursuits, and overall business line strategy.

Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in engineering, architecture, construction, or a related degree from an accredited program.
  • Minimum of 5 years of related professional experience in design and/or project management.
  • Professional Engineering (PE) registration is preferred.
  • Proven leadership in developing and implementing a vision that has brought a positive impact.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to present complex information to all levels of employees and clients.
  • Strong interpersonal, analytical, problem-solving, and critical-thinking skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to influence, lead, and manage change thoughtfully and positively.
  • History of high performance as documented in the Burns & McDonnell performance management system.

Strong preference for the following:
  • Previous personnel management experience.
  • Demonstrated experience in mentorship and team development.
  • Proven planning, collaboration, organization, and execution skills.
  • Experience giving and receiving constructive performance feedback.
  • Burns & McDonnell recruiting experience.
  • Demonstrated experience in client development, business development, and the proposal process.
  • Demonstrated financial success on completed projects.
  • Knowledge of project management methodologies and tools (e.g., EcoSys, Microsoft Project, PowerBI).
  • Familiarity with data analysis and efficiency tools (e.g., Pivot Tables, Office 365 apps).

Location: Position to be located in the North Texas Region.
