Job Overview
VDOT is seeking an experienced Senior Network Engineer to implement, maintain, troubleshoot, and support the agency s enterprise IT network infrastructure. The Senior Network Engineer will be responsible for day-to-day network operations, infrastructure documentation, research, analysis, configuration, and implementation.
The ideal candidate should have strong hands-on experience with enterprise networking technologies, network architecture, troubleshooting, security, and hybrid/cloud connectivity. The candidate must be comfortable working independently and collaborating with infrastructure, cloud, DevSecOps teams, vendors, and agency stakeholders.
Key Responsibilities
- Design, configure, implement, upgrade, manage, and troubleshoot enterprise routers, switches, VPN concentrators, firewalls, wireless access points, and load balancers.
- Troubleshoot complex network infrastructure issues and identify root causes affecting network performance and availability.
- Use network monitoring tools, diagnostic software, line monitors, and test equipment to identify and resolve network problems.
- Design, install, configure, and troubleshoot LAN and WAN enterprise networks.
- Work closely with agency IT infrastructure suppliers, stakeholders, cloud teams, and DevSecOps teams to gather and validate network requirements, configurations, and specifications.
- Assist with troubleshooting network issues that impact application performance, connectivity, and system uptime.
- Support the installation, maintenance, upgrades, and documentation of facility network infrastructure.
- Collaborate with cloud and DevSecOps teams to optimize hybrid connectivity and SD-WAN configurations.
- Develop and maintain accurate network architecture diagrams, topology diagrams, IP addressing schemes, firewall rules, and access-control documentation.
- Monitor network environments for compliance with information security requirements, architecture policies, and applicable standards.
- Design reliable, scalable, fault-tolerant network architectures.
- Perform network performance tuning, monitoring, metrics/statistics collection, and support disaster recovery activities.
- Analyze network capacity, availability, and performance and recommend improvements.
- Work independently on assigned network engineering projects while coordinating with internal teams and external vendors.
- Maintain accurate technical documentation for network configurations, infrastructure, and changes.
- Support network-related projects involving cloud environments and emerging networking technologies.
Preferred Background
- Experience supporting large-scale enterprise or government network environments.
- Strong knowledge of Cisco or Juniper networking technologies.
- Experience with SD-WAN and hybrid cloud connectivity.
- Experience working with security, infrastructure, cloud, and DevSecOps teams.
- Strong technical documentation and network diagramming skills.
- Ability to troubleshoot complex network issues independently.
- Relevant networking certification such as CCNA, JNCIA-Junos, or equivalent.
