Position: Senior Network Architect
Location: 10 Park Plaza, Boston, MA (Hybrid)
Duration: 12 months with possibility of extensions
Rate: $80-$85/hour
MassDOT operates a statewide infrastructure spanning
250+ locations across the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. As the organization transitions key applications from on-premises environments to
AWS, the network plays a critical role in ensuring
enterprise-wide reliability, performance, and security. This role will serve as the senior technical authority guiding the design, modernization, and scalability of MassDOT's network architecture.
Detailed List of Job Duties and Responsibilities:
- Architectural Strategy: Design and maintain a robust hub-and-spoke and mesh network architecture supporting approximately 250 distributed locations across Massachusetts.
- Hybrid-Cloud Integration: Architect and oversee high-speed, secure connectivity between on-premises datacenters and AWS using Direct Connect, Transit Gateway, and advanced routing policies.
- Routing & Switching: Lead and optimize MassDOT's routing environment focused on EIGRP, with supplemental BGP for cloud and external peering and targeted OSPF deployments.
- Security & Load Balancing: Architect and integrate Fortigate firewalls, VPN technologies, and application delivery services including NetScaler and other load-balancing platforms.
- Observability: Leverage SolarWinds NPM/NCM and other monitoring tools to provide organization-wide visibility, perform advanced troubleshooting, and support proactive capacity planning.
- Modernization Initiatives: Drive the evolution from traditional hardware-centric networking to Software-Defined Networking (SDN) and modern cloud-native network architectures.
Required Qualifications:
- 10+ years of enterprise network engineering experience, including 4+ years in a Lead Architect or Principal-level role.
- Expert-level proficiency with Cisco IOS, IOS-XE, and NX-OS platforms.
- Deep mastery of EIGRP and BGP, with hands-on experience designing and troubleshooting large-scale, multi-site routing architectures.
- Proven experience architecting networking solutions in AWS, including VPCs, security groups, routing, Direct Connect, Route 53, and Transit Gateway.
- Hands-on experience with Fortigate/FortiOS, VPN technologies, and firewall policy design.
- Proficiency with NetScaler, F5 LTM/GTM, or similar load-balancing/ADC platforms.
- Experience using SolarWinds for observability, configuration management, alerting, and reporting across an enterprise network.
- Strong communication skills with the ability to translate complex technical concepts for non-technical and executive stakeholders.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or equivalent professional experience.
- CCNP (required) with CCIE and/or AWS Certified Solutions Architect - Professional strongly preferred.
- Experience designing and supporting networks across large distributed environments (100+ sites).
- Background leading cross-functional modernization, SDN adoption, or cloud-migration initiatives.
