Senior UI Engineer (AI Systems)
Contract
Pittsburgh, PA (Open to remote)
For this role, Ideally in the Pittsburgh area so they can work Hybrid in the office,or Second choice would be remote, with some travel occasionally to the Pittsburgh office.
They are looking for someone with experience in Ember.JS(highly desired). Either React or Next.JS is a must.
Also, someone with experience in AI system development. They use Cursor heavily for AI design. They are open to other tools, but Cursor is preferred. They want someone who can use AI tools to build systems, and then they'll code the UI. The expectation is that the systems will need continual enhancement, so they will be doing 50% UI coding and 50% AI system building.
This person will also need very strong experience with FIGMA. The process they are trying to achieve is to design in Figma, have an AI agent pick that up, and then proceed to code. The expectation is that this person will have built an AI agent that can code from FIGMA.
ABOUT THE ROLE:
We are looking for a Senior UI Engineer who is resourceful, dedicated, and passionate about establishing robust, high-performance foundations for ambitious user-facing applications. In this role, you will not simply use AI tools: you will design and build the underlying AI workflows, subagents, and reusable skills that allow our engineering team to scale with speed, reliability, and precision.
You bring extensive, hands-on experience with modern front-end technologies (particularly EmberJS), and building automated AI engineering systems. Our ideal candidate thrives on solving complex architectural setup challenges, setting up continuous testing guardrails, and driving our UI modernization strategy.
WHAT YOU'LL DO (The Day to Day)
• Design & Build AI Engineering Systems: Create, version, and maintain reusable AI skills, subagents, and automated review guardrails that enforce architecture standards, accessibility compliance, and code quality before human review.
• Design-to-Code Automation: Build and maintain automated UI skills that read directly from Figma Dev Mode tokens/components and generate standardized, production-ready EmberJS components matching house architecture and conventions.
• Own Scaffolding & Architecture: Design, create, and own the standard EmberJS application for all new projects, including project scaffolding and essential configurations aligned with "The Ember Way."
• Enforce Definition of Done: Ensure all features ship with complete unit and UI test coverage that run automatically in the CI/CD pipeline on every commit, blocking merges on test failures.
• Establish Developer Tooling: Configure and maintain essential developer environment tooling (e.g., Cursor environment setups, ESLint, Prettier, Embroider/Webpack) and state management best practices (Ember Data).
• Cross-Stack System Alignment: Collaborate with lead engineers and architects to align the UI boilerplate with our broader full-stack infrastructure, APIs, and micro-frontend strategy.
• Issue Resolution & Quality: Lead complex production incident resolution, diagnose subtle system failures, and implement long-term automated preventative solutions.
YOU’VE GOT WHAT WE NEED (The Must Haves)
• Demonstrated AI Engineering Experience: Proven experience designing, building, and shipping AI skills, agents, or automated development lifecycle workflows (e.g., custom review agents, test generation tools, or automated pipeline guardrails). Passive usage or prompt engineering alone does not meet the bar.
• EmberJS & Front-End Expertise: Bachelor’s or Master’s in Computer Science or related field with 6+ years of relevant front-end experience, including 3+ years in a senior capacity with EmberJS (Ember CLI, Ember FastBoot/SSR, Ember Data, and Embroider).
• Design Systems & Figma Dev Mode Integration: Direct experience managing and building against design systems, tokens, and automated component translation using Figma Dev Mode.
• Testing & CI/CD Discipline: Inseparable commitment to unit and UI testing as a core requirement of feature delivery, with experience wiring automated execution into CI/CD pipelines.
• Full-Stack & System Design Breadth: Broad architectural reasoning across APIs (RESTful/GraphQL), state management, micro-frontends, backend contracts, and web rendering performance.
• Critical Evaluation of AI Output: Ability to rigorously evaluate, supervise, and debug AI-generated code for architectural flaws, security issues, and performance regressions.
GOT THESE, TOO? SWEET (The Nice to Haves)
• High transactional e-commerce experience.
• Monorepo management tools (e.g., Lerna, Nx).
• Cross-stack framework familiarity (e.g., React, Next.js).
• Experience with Web Components, StencilJS, Lit, or Style Dictionary.
• Storybook & MDX documentation sandboxes.
• Native mobile application context (iOS / Android).
