Summary

We are seeking a Linguist III to join the FAIR team. This role is ideal for candidates with a graduate degree in Linguistics, strong analytical skills, and native proficiency in a non-English language (preferably Hindi). The successful candidate will contribute to cutting-edge AI research by performing linguistic analyses, error evaluations, and typological studies across Indo-Aryan and South Dravidian languages.

 

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform linguistic analyses on large datasets.

  • Conduct error analysis of AI model outputs, identifying frequent and severe error categories.

  • Write and revise annotation guidelines for translation and other AI projects.

  • Carry out typological and sociolinguistic research across multiple languages.

  • Analyze Responsible AI issues (toxic language, hate speech, gender bias, cultural bias) in multilingual contexts.

  • Conduct literature reviews on NLP-adjacent topics and summarize findings.

  • Compare vendor deliveries, identify error patterns, and provide actionable feedback.

  • Provide expertise in typology, morpho-syntax, sociolinguistics, phonetics/phonology, pragmatics, and related fields.

  • Collaborate with native speakers and cross-functional teams (engineers, data scientists, researchers).

  • Communicate linguistic findings clearly to technical and research stakeholders.

 

Required Skills & Qualifications

  • Native speaker of a non-English language (preferably Hindi) with high proficiency in another Indo-Aryan or South Dravidian language.

  • Broad knowledge of languages in Indo-Aryan or South Dravidian groups.

  • Strong written and spoken communication skills (business and research contexts).

  • Proficiency in Python (required) and SQL (required); other data analysis languages are a plus.

  • Ability to work independently, prioritize tasks, and report progress under pressure.

  • Familiarity with international language-classification standards.

  • Graduate degree in Linguistics (PhD preferred).

  • Firm grasp of language typology, syntax, morphology, sociolinguistics, corpus linguistics, writing systems, pragmatics, and phonology.

  • Experience applying basic NLP techniques.

 

Preferred Qualifications

  • Specialization in corpus linguistics.

  • Fieldwork experience.

  • Working knowledge of additional or low-resource languages.

  • Training in project management.

  • Experience collaborating with ML/NLP engineers or contributing to research papers.

  • No known conflicts of interest in machine translation, ASR, TTS, or LLM research.
