We currently have an exciting opportunity for Senior Power Systems Engineer to join our Engineering and Projects team in the Energy Group located in Torrey Pines (San Diego, CA).

This position typically reports to a technical manager and is responsible for the planning, managing and technical performance of one or more high voltage power system projects. Coordinates all phases of assigned high-voltage project(s) from inception through completion. Participates with technical staff, program managers and/or Division/Group executive management to develop and implement high-voltage power system facility improvements. Objectives are typically accomplished through coordination with engineering managers and/or team leaders. Responsible for decisions that impact project outcomes and leading a project team. Within a few years, this position is likely to develop into a manger position with direct reports.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Leads the development, construction, and commissioning of high voltage electrical power systems for gyrotrons operating at DIII-D Facility
  • Leads a project team and is responsible for decisions that impact high-voltage power for ECH gyrotron operations
  • Oversees design, procurement, construction, and commissioning of high-power electrical systems used to operate gyrotrons at currents up to 90 A and voltages up to 80 kV.
  • Maintains electrical system architecture and work with engineers and designers to produce electrical schematics and installation drawings for system upgrades
  • Coordinates and collaborates with end-users and operators of power systems to complete commissioning efforts and survey opportunities to upgrade designs
  • Oversees all other electrical aspects of a program that manufactures and tests gyrotrons
  • Produces cost, schedule, and staffing estimates related to the electrical system design, procurement and installation.
  • Plans and coordinates the maintenance of engineering solutions including documentation, reporting, publishing, and making technical and other presentations to ensure viability of the solution(s) in an evolving environment
  • Formulates plans, typically long term, for solution(s) development, documentation, and deployment, as well as meeting various compliance, reporting, and safety standards following established engineering procedures
  • Develops technical requirements and work scopes for suppliers and sub-contractors
  • May function in an advisory or project leadership role providing direction to less experienced professional staff, and leads other engineers in developing designs
  • Plans for future applications of solutions based on new developments in engineering technology
  • Participates in or may lead the development of new or expansion of existing business opportunities
  • Observes all laws, regulations, and other applicable obligations wherever and whenever business is conducted on behalf of the Company. Works in a safe manner in accordance with established operating procedures and practices

Job Qualifications

  • Typically requires a Bachelor's degree, Master's degree or PhD in Electrical Engineering or related technical field and progressively complex engineering experience as follows; ten or more years with a Bachelor's degree, eight or more years' experience with a Master's degree, and six or more with a PhD. May substitute equivalent experience in lieu of education
  • Demonstrated technical expertise in the application of engineering principles, concepts, theory, and practice
  • Demonstrated team management and leadership skills including organizing, planning, scheduling, and coordinating workloads to meet established deadlines or milestones
  • Experience in power systems engineering and/or in high-power, high voltage DC systems up to 100 kV, especially within the system requirement and design phases.
  • Experience in design, fabrication, and installation of 12.47kVAC, 4160 VAC, and 480/208/110VAC power distribution equipment
  • Demonstrates detailed and extensive technical expertise and application of engineering concepts, principles, codes, and theory; and practice with the ability to organize, schedule, and coordinate workloads to meet established deadlines or milestones with some experience in project leadership
  • Must possess strong communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills to effectively interface with other functional departments, customers, government representatives and/or professionals, and be capable of representing the organization as a prime technical contact, as well as providing leadership and guidance to less experienced professionals
  • Must be customer focused and have the ability to understand new concepts quickly and apply them accurately throughout an evolving environment
  • Must be able to work independently and as part of a team
  • Ability to work extended hours as required

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Experience in managing personnel for high-voltage systems, setting priorities and goals for direct reports.
  • Experience in managing and implementing annual and long-term technical, schedule, quality, business, and financial objectives for the high-voltage engineering unit(s) and development of Group/Company objectives
  • Knowledge of EVMS
  • Computer skills: Microsoft Office including Project and Visio, Windchill

  • Ability to travel internationally as assigned or required
