Senior Looker Consultant

Role Overview

Improving is seeking a Senior Looker Consultant to join a high-profile Data & Analytics transformation for a major telecommunications client.

This is a highly technical, hands-on consulting role focused on migrating high-usage Tableau dashboards to Looker while designing and implementing an enterprise-grade semantic layer using LookML. The consultant will lead the implementation of a four-project hub-and-spoke architecture that becomes the organization''s single source of truth for enterprise metrics.

The ideal candidate possesses deep expertise in Looker and LookML and has successfully designed and implemented enterprise-scale Looker environments. This individual will make key architectural decisions, establish governance standards, mentor development teams, and guide stakeholders through delivery.

What You Will Do

Architecture & Semantic Layer Design

• Own the design and implementation of the hub-and-spoke LookML architecture consisting of one central looker-ssot project and three domain analytics projects.
• Define and build the enterprise "Gold Layer" semantic model in LookML, including:
• Certified Views
• Shared Measures
• Explores that serve as the enterprise-wide single source of truth.
• Establish LookML development standards including:
• Naming conventions
• Project structure
• Folder organization
• CODEOWNERS configuration
• Review existing architecture with stakeholders, incorporate feedback, and drive the design to a production-ready state.

Security & Access Model

• Implement and validate the complete four-layer security model including:
• BigQuery IAM
• Looker Project Boundaries
• LookML Access Grants
• BigQuery Column-Level Security
• Configure LDAP group-to-Looker user attribute mappings using Google OAuth for:
• Geographic access (U.S. vs. Non-U.S.)
• Business domain access (Finance, HR, etc.)
• Define sensitivity classifications for Silver and external data sources.
• Ensure the SSOT governance review process enforces appropriate onboarding controls.

Technical Leadership & Proof of Concept Execution

• Lead the technical implementation of the enterprise Looker hub-and-spoke architecture, including:
• Gold Layer semantic model
• GitLab Merge Request workflow
• Dashboard consumption using JavaScript Embed SDK and Looker Studio Pro
• Spoke project imports and version propagation
• Security validation scenarios

·        Define pass/fail criteria for all Proof of Concept test cases.

·        Produce technical findings and executive-ready readouts for CTO review.

Governance & Team Enablement

• Configure GitLab governance including:
• Repository structure
• Merge Requests Required settings
• Advanced Deploy Mode
• CODEOWNERS enforcement

·        Define the Looker Marketplace publishing process to distribute certified metrics to domain teams.

• Mentor domain BI teams on:
• LookML best practices
• Hub-and-spoke architecture
• Governed Merge Request workflows

·        Contribute to automated low-usage detection processes and governance initiatives for retiring stale content.

What You Need to Bring

Required Qualifications

·        6+ years of experience in Data & Analytics, including at least 3 years of hands-on production experience with Looker and LookML.

• Deep expertise with LookML including:
• Views
• Models
• Explores
• Derived Tables
• Access Grants
• Access Filters
• User Attributes
• Project Imports
• Refinements

·        Proven experience designing and implementing enterprise multi-project Looker architectures—you have built these environments, not simply supported them.

• Strong BigQuery expertise including:
• Dataset architecture
• IAM
• Column-level security using Data Catalog Policy Tags
• Service account access patterns
• Experience with GitLab or GitHub including:
• Branching strategies
• Merge Request workflows
• CODEOWNERS
• CI/CD integration with Looker

·        Ability to lead technical discovery by analyzing Tableau workbooks, identifying business logic and data sources, and translating them into scalable LookML designs.

·        Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to work directly with technical teams and executive stakeholders.

Preferred Qualifications

·        Experience with Looker''s Advanced Deploy Mode and Deployment Manager.

·        Familiarity with Teradata and experience supporting migrations from Teradata to BigQuery.

• Experience with:
• Looker Studio Pro
• Looker JavaScript Embed SDK
• Knowledge of:
• LDAP directory services
• Google Workspace Group Sync
• Identity federation into Looker

·        Experience with enterprise BI governance frameworks including:

• Metric certification
• Data catalogs (Alation preferred)
• Semantic layer standardization

·        Previous consulting or client-facing experience where you owned both technical delivery and executive stakeholder relationships.
