Software Engineer
Location: Riverwoods, IL (Onsite)
Role Overview
This role centers on building and optimizing high-performance backend services and cloud-based data processing pipelines that support critical financial operations. You will work across Java/Spring microservices, AWS EMR/Spark workloads, and a mature testing culture to deliver secure, resilient, and compliant software. This position supports a client in the financial services industry.
Key Responsibilities
- Design and develop enterprise-grade backend services using Java 21, Spring Boot, and microservice patterns.
- Build and optimize distributed data processing pipelines leveraging AWS EMR, Apache Spark, and related cloud-native services.
- Implement automated testing frameworks using TDD, BDD, JUnit, Cucumber, and mocking libraries.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to deliver secure, compliant financial systems.
- Enhance system reliability through observability, logging, metrics, and performance tuning.
- Participate in code reviews, architectural discussions, and continuous improvement initiatives.
- Ensure adherence to financial-industry standards for security, auditability, and operational excellence.
Required Qualifications
Experience: 5 7 years of professional experience as a Software Engineer or Backend Engineer.
Technical Skills: Strong proficiency in Java 21, Spring Boot, RESTful APIs, and microservices. Hands-on experience with AWS, including EMR, Spark, S3, Lambda, or CloudWatch. Solid understanding of distributed systems, parallel processing, and data pipeline design. Demonstrated experience with TDD, BDD, Cucumber, and automated testing frameworks. Familiarity with CI/CD pipelines, Git, Jenkins, or GitLab.
Other: Experience working in regulated environments or large-scale enterprise systems. Willingness to go to an office in Riverwoods, IL is required.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience in financial services, fintech, risk systems, or high-throughput transaction platforms.
- Knowledge of Kafka, Kinesis, or other streaming technologies.
- Exposure to DevOps practices, infrastructure-as-code, or containerization (Docker, Kubernetes).
- Understanding of domain-driven design (DDD) and event-driven architectures.
- Performance tuning experience for low-latency, high-volume systems.
Required Skills : Must have: Java, Spring, AWS, TDD, Cucumber, must have done their own testing (it wont be on the resume, but must have reverse strings, anagrams, data structure, algorithms) Nice to have: EMR/Spark Requirements: o Willing to go to office in Riverwood, IL (preference but for super strong candidates could look at hybrid) o Experience with Java Spring, Java 21 o AWS experience with EMR/Spark-SUPER NICE TO HAVE (but could be okay if they're strong and don't have Spark experience) o most important is Java coding/development (looking for core engineer) o Senior engineers primarily (5-7 years at a minimum of Java) o Familiar with TDD, BDD, Cucumber o looking for a backend Java engineer; working on data intensive; Spark applications and maintain and run in some case; some are Springboot o Interview layout: Work experience, then coding questions in real time (how do you reverse strings, anagrams, etc)
