Who we're looking for

Toyota's Powertrain Design (PDE) team is looking for a passionate, highly-motivated Design Engineer with an interest in hybrid transmissions (transaxles).

Within the first two years, the primary responsibilities of this role are to support the development of a new transaxle for the North American market. This will include:

  • Collaborating with NA stakeholders (suppliers, supplier development, purchasing, assembly plants) and Japan stakeholders (Chief Engineer and designers) to localize a combination of aluminum die-cast and lubrication related parts through:

    • Simultaneous Engineering (SE), including supplier Go and See.
    • Prototype part making and evaluation, both component and unit level.
    • Modifying design based on prototype evaluation and to optimize mass production.
    • Working with unit and vehicle plants to support transaxle and vehicle build trials and ensure a smooth launch and Start of Production (SOP).
    • Early Detection, Early Resolution (EDER) phases after part introduction into mass production.
  • Supporting benchmarking of other competitors transaxles to collect ideas for cost down and performance improvements for current and future designs

After this period, it is expected that the engineer will transition into a leadership role to develop transaxles to meet future vehicle architectures and customer expectations (i.e. power, fuel economy, warranty etc.).

What you'll be doing

  • Using your knowledge of the Toyota Design Process and Standards, outputting typical design team deliverables such as 3D models, 2D drawings, technical reports and instruction sheets.
  • Attending routine Design Reviews and reporting on the key metrics of your design.
  • Developing countermeasures to achieve design targets such as cost, mass, durability and warranty based on evaluation and quotation results.
  • Building relationships with key stakeholders (such as drivetrain and vehicle design, TMC design, purchasing and assembly plants).
  • Project managing NA suppliers to ensure on-time delivery of quality parts in line with the requirements of each Toyota milestone.
  • Process improvements, advancing PDE's design process capability to improve quality, EDER and on-time delivery of design deliverables.
  • Benchmarking similar designs to ensure our competitiveness (i.e. cost and customer expectations).
  • Training in the Toyota Way

What you bring

  • Bachelor of Engineering (or above) in Mechanical Engineering or other technical disciplines.
  • Minimum of 5+ years of professional experience in Automotive Design/Development.
  • Experience utilizing CAD tools and applying GD&T to support product design and manufacturability.
  • Experience in the detailed design and release of prototype and production component drawings.
  • Detailed knowledge of typical transmission and transaxle manufacturing methods (Gear and Shaft Manufacturing Methods, Aluminum and Iron castings, Thermoplastics, Stampings and Forgings).
  • Must have a level of proficiency with Excel and PowerPoint.
  • Strong knowledge of Conventional, Hybrid and Electrified Powertrains.
  • During peak periods must be willing to travel domestically and internationally, up to 10-20%.
  • Experience leading other engineers, including mentoring and reviewing of designs, technical proposals, drawing sign-off, etc.

Added bonus if you have

  • Master's Degree in engineering or other technical disciplines.
  • Hands-on experience with transaxle, transmission, and powertrain assembly.
  • Detailed design knowledge of transaxle systems such as Gears, Shafts, Bearings, Motor/Generators, Stators, lubrication systems, cooling systems,
  • Experience with CREO, WBDM, and typical powertrain CAE design software (FEA, CFD, GT Power or similar).
  • A working knowledge of DRBFM.
  • A working knowledge of Quality Management and Supply Chain Management principles
  • Team-oriented thinking and a "can-do" attitude.
  • Toyota TBP panel - Pass.
