The Senior Cloud Systems Engineer, Microsoft Azure is responsible for the hands-on design, implementation, administration, security, monitoring, and lifecycle management of enterprise infrastructure hosted in Microsoft Azure.
This role supports Azure compute, networking, storage, virtual desktop, identity integration, monitoring, image management, patching, migration, and hybrid-cloud services. The engineer serves as a senior technical resource for Azure infrastructure initiatives and works with application, security, network, desktop, disaster-recovery, and project teams to deliver reliable, secure, supportable, and cost-effective cloud solutions.
Responsibilities
· Design, deploy, configure, and support Microsoft Azure infrastructure services.
· Administer Azure virtual machines, virtual machine scale sets, managed disks, storage accounts, snapshots, and Azure Compute Gallery resources.
· Build, maintain, patch, test, and publish standardized Windows images used for Azure Virtual Desktop and other Azure workloads.
· Support Azure Virtual Desktop host pools, session hosts, application groups, scaling plans, user assignments, profile solutions, and application publishing.
· Configure and troubleshoot Azure virtual networks, subnets, network security groups, routing, peering, private endpoints, DNS, Azure Bastion, and hybrid connectivity.
· Work with network teams to support ExpressRoute, VPN, firewall, and on-premises connectivity requirements.
· Integrate Azure-hosted systems with Active Directory, Microsoft Entra ID, multifactor authentication, role-based access control, managed identities, and service principals.
· Implement and maintain Azure monitoring through Azure Monitor, Log Analytics, Azure Monitor Agent, data collection rules, alerts, workbooks, and diagnostic settings.
· Support Azure Update Manager, Windows patching, image lifecycle processes, and vulnerability-remediation activities.
· Configure and maintain Azure Policy, resource tagging, governance controls, role assignments, and least-privilege access.
· Troubleshoot complex issues involving Windows, Azure networking, identity, storage, application access, performance, and hybrid dependencies.
· Support Azure Migrate discovery, assessments, migration planning, and workload-transition activities.
· Assist with Azure backup, replication, disaster recovery, availability, and business-continuity solutions.
· Develop and maintain PowerShell, Azure CLI, and infrastructure-as-code automation for repeatable deployments and operational tasks.
· Review Azure utilization and cost data, and recommend opportunities for optimization, rightsizing, standardization, and lifecycle improvement.
· Participate in architectural reviews, technical planning, change management, implementation, documentation, and operational handoff.
· Serve as an escalation point and technical subject-matter expert for Azure infrastructure issues.
· Create and maintain build documentation, support procedures, diagrams, standards, and operational runbooks.
· Other tasks as directed by manager.
Required Qualifications
· Bachelor’s degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field; or an equivalent combination of education and experience
· Five years of experience supporting enterprise infrastructure, including at least three years of hands-on Microsoft Azure administration or engineering experience
· Hands-on experience deploying and supporting Azure virtual machines, networking, storage, monitoring, and identity-integrated services
· Experience supporting Microsoft Windows Server and Windows desktop operating systems in an enterprise environment
· Working knowledge of Active Directory, Microsoft Entra ID, role-based access control, DNS, certificates, and enterprise authentication
· Experience troubleshooting complex infrastructure issues spanning cloud, network, operating system, identity, and application layers
· Experience using PowerShell, Azure CLI, or similar tools to administer and automate Azure environments
· Strong technical documentation, analytical, communication, and cross-functional collaboration skills
· Ability to independently manage technical assignments from design and implementation through testing, documentation, and operational support
Preferred Qualifications
· Hands-on experience designing and supporting Azure Virtual Desktop
· Experience building and managing Windows images through Azure Compute Gallery, Azure Image Builder, or similar image-management platforms
· Experience with FSLogix, Windows App, RemoteApp publishing, autoscaling, and multi-session Windows environments
· Experience with Azure ExpressRoute, hybrid networking, Azure DNS, private endpoints, Azure Bastion, and network security groups
· Experience with Azure Monitor, Log Analytics, Azure Monitor Agent, data collection rules, Microsoft Defender for Cloud, or comparable cloud-security platforms
· Experience with Azure Policy, management groups, subscriptions, resource groups, tagging, and enterprise governance
· Experience with Azure Migrate, Azure Site Recovery, Azure Backup, or hybrid workload migrations
· Experience using Bicep, ARM templates, Terraform, or another infrastructure-as-code platform
· Experience supporting VMware or other on-premises virtualization platforms integrated with Azure services
· Experience working in healthcare, financial services, or another highly regulated environment
· Familiarity with HIPAA, security controls, change management, vulnerability management, and audit requirements
· Microsoft certifications, such as Azure Administrator Associate, Azure Network Engineer Associate, Azure Virtual Desktop Specialty, Azure Solutions Architect Expert, or equivalent demonstrated experience
