Senior Data Engineer Fort Worth, TX Hybrid
A natural gas producer in downtown Fort Worth is hiring a Senior Data Engineer to own its data warehouse and the pipelines that feed it. The warehouse runs on SQL Server on premises today, and the company is about to select its next platform: Snowflake, Databricks, or Microsoft Fabric. You will help make that call, then lead the build. Hybrid, three days onsite, with an optional 9/80 schedule and every other Friday off.
Why this one is worth a look The data platform here sits underneath an AI program that is already live across the business, not a pilot deck. The company runs private model inference on its own GPUs for work that cannot leave the building, uses Azure AI Foundry for everything else, and has built internal tooling that gives employees governed access to the data warehouse through an AI assistant. The structure and reliability of that warehouse is now the ceiling on what the whole program can do, which puts this role in front of executives early and often. A new ERP is going live at the same time, so the source data landscape is being reset rather than patched.
What you will own - The data warehouse and every pipeline feeding it: design, reliability, performance, and cost.
- Data modeling. Dimensional design, conformed dimensions, history handling, and the standards the rest of the team builds against.
- Pipeline engineering and orchestration. Ingestion from ERP, operational, field, and third party sources, with monitoring and alerting that catches failures before the business notices them.
- Data quality and governance. Validation, reconciliation, lineage, and access control appropriate to a public company.
- The platform evaluation. Helping build the business case and run the selection across Snowflake, Databricks, and Microsoft Fabric, then leading the migration that follows.
- Engineering practice for the data team. Code review, version control, CI/CD for data, testing, and documentation that outlives whoever wrote it.
- Technical leadership alongside a hands on engineering manager, and mentoring the engineers around you. This is a senior individual contributor seat, not a people management role.
What you need - Seven or more years in data engineering, including time as the most senior data engineer in the room.
- Deep SQL Server. Advanced T-SQL, performance tuning, indexing and partitioning strategy, and ETL or ELT development in SSIS or a comparable tool.
- Strong dimensional modeling and data warehouse design, with specific examples of models you built that held up once the business started using them.
- Production pipeline orchestration: monitoring, error handling, idempotent reprocessing, and real ownership of what you ship.
- Python for data engineering work.
- Hands on experience with at least one of Snowflake, Databricks, or Microsoft Fabric, and a defensible view on the tradeoffs between them.
- Experience carrying a data platform from on premises to cloud, including the parts that went wrong.
- Git and CI/CD as ordinary working habits rather than new ideas.
- The ability to write for an executive audience. Business cases, options papers, and cost models are part of this job in year one.
Nice to have - Energy, oil and gas, or utilities data: production, land, well, midstream, financial, or regulatory reporting.
- Azure data services.
- ERP data integration, particularly through and after a go live.
- dbt or a comparable transformation and testing framework.
- Preparing data for AI and retrieval use: semantic layers, metadata, and documentation an assistant can navigate.
- Streaming or near real time ingestion.
Location and schedule - Downtown Fort Worth, Texas. Hybrid, three days in the office and two from home.
- Optional 9/80 schedule. Eighty hours across nine working days in a two week period, eight days of nine hours plus one of eight, and every other Friday off.
- Open to candidates in DFW or already planning a move there. This is not a remote role.
Compensation Base salary depends on experience. The role also carries an annual cash bonus and an equity award, and the specifics are covered on the first call.
