Azure Virtual Desktop (AVD) Customer Engineer
Role Overview
We are seeking an experienced Azure Virtual Desktop (AVD) Customer Engineer to design, deploy, and operate enterprise-grade virtual desktop and RemoteApp solutions using Microsoft Azure Virtual Desktop, following Microsoft-supported architectures and best practices.
This role is AVD-centric and focuses on host pools, session hosts, identity integration, networking, security, profile management, scaling, and operational performance. The ideal candidate has hands-on experience delivering AVD at scale and supporting customers through architecture design, migration, and steady-state operations.
Key Responsibilities
Design, implement, and support Azure Virtual Desktop (AVD) environments for enterprise customers.
Act as a customer-facing engineer, delivering greenfield deployments, migrations, and operational support.
Provide architectural guidance across Azure compute, storage, networking, identity, and security layers.
Ensure solutions align with Microsoft-supported and documented AVD configurations.
Azure Virtual Desktop Core Responsibilities
Design and deploy Azure Virtual Desktop solutions, including:
o
Pooled and Personal host pools
o
Windows 11 Enterprise multi-session and single-session desktops
o
RemoteApp and full desktop delivery models
Build and manage session host environments using:
o
Azure Virtual Machines
o
Custom images and image lifecycle management (capture, versioning, updates)
Configure and manage:
o
Host pools, application groups, and workspaces
o
Scaling plans and capacity optimization
o
FSLogix profile management using Azure Files or Azure NetApp Files
Integrate AVD with supported identity models:
o
Microsoft Entra ID Hybrid Join or Entra ID Join (where supported)
o
Active Directory or Entra Domain Services as required
Secure AVD environments using:
o
Conditional Access and Multi-Factor Authentication
o
Azure networking controls (VNets, subnets, NSGs, routing)
Troubleshoot and resolve:
o
User sign-in and session initialization issues
o
Performance and resource contention problems
o
Application launch and FSLogix profile issues
Migration & Modernization
Support customer migrations from:
o
On-premises VDI platforms (e.g., Citrix Virtual Apps and Desktops, VMware Horizon)
o
Legacy Remote Desktop Services (RDS) environments
o
Traditional physical desktop deployments
Assist with:
o
User persona analysis and workload suitability
o
Host pool sizing and cost optimization
o
Positioning Azure Virtual Desktop vs Windows 365 based on supported Microsoft guidance
Windows, Identity & Security Integration
Configure and secure Windows 10/11 Enterprise images for virtual desktop use.
Integrate AVD with:
o
Microsoft Entra ID
o
Conditional Access and Zero Trust access policies
Implement security controls including:
o
Microsoft Defender for Endpoint
o
OS hardening and recommended security baselines
Collaborate with endpoint management teams using Microsoft Intune where applicable.
Troubleshooting & Automation
Perform advanced troubleshooting across:
o
AVD session hosts and control plane dependencies
o
FSLogix profiles and storage layers
o
Azure networking and identity flows
Use supported tooling such as:
o
Azure Monitor and Log Analytics
o
Event Viewer and FSLogix diagnostics
Automate deployments and operational tasks using:
o
PowerShell
o
ARM or Bicep templates
o
Azure CLI
Maintain clear, customer-ready documentation and operational handover materials.
Required Skills & Experience
Strong hands-on experience with Azure Virtual Desktop in enterprise environments.
Proven experience with:
o
Pooled and personal host pools
o
Windows 11 Enterprise multi-session workloads
o
FSLogix profile management
Solid understanding of:
o
Azure compute, storage, and networking fundamentals
o
Identity-driven access and Conditional Access
Experience delivering solutions in a partner, MSP, or consulting environment.
Excellent troubleshooting, communication, and customer engagement skills.
