Description Job Summary
The Fueling Staff Structural Engineer will work on project teams to create world-class structural designs for new projects, alterations, and redevelopments supporting a variety of projects. This position supports the Aircraft Systems and Department of Defense (DoD) Business Lines within the Aviation & Federal Global Practice.
Burns & McDonnell is considered the leading consultant in the aircraft fueling industry. We are engaged in a variety of high-visibility design and construction projects at major airports and military installations worldwide. The Fueling Staff Structural Engineer will perform engineering and consulting services for private airlines, public airport, or city entities and the US Department of defense. Typical projects range in size and complexity from single tank and dispenser gas stations to million-barrel bulk fuel storage depots and fuel hydrant systems distributing millions of gallons of jet fuel per day. Many of our commercial projects are design-build with engineering support continuing through procurement and construction including direct coordination with construction teams and periodic on-site construction observation in addition to traditional construction administration services.
The Fueling Structural Engineer will work with project teams throughout the design and construction process, adapting structural plans accordingly to budget constraints, design factors or client needs.
Essential Functions
- Perform structural design of projects from conceptual phase through design completion.
- Design structural components for project needs and requirements that are set forth by the project managers.
- Applies strong knowledge of commonly used structural engineering/design concepts, principles, practices, codes, and procedures within the structural engineering services industry.
- Research and compile project related data as required by the project managers.
- Compiles information for client presentations, shop drawing reviews, and construction administration for projects.
- Perform field inspections, measurements, and calculations for public and private clients.
- Perform other duties as assigned and comply with all company policies and standards.
Qualifications Education and Experience
- Bachelor's degree in Structural Engineering or related field from an ABET-accredited program and 3 years of structural engineering experience; or
- Bachelor's degree in Structural or related Engineering Technology from an ABET-accredited program with successful completion of the FE exam and 3 years of experience; or
- Master's degree in Structural Engineering and 2 years of structural engineering experience.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Strong knowledge of standard structural engineering techniques and procedures.
- Proficiency with structural analysis programs (e.g., RISA 3D, ETABS, SAFE) and BIM tools (Revit, Tekla).
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to work methodically and analytically in a quantitative problem-solving environment and demonstrated critical thinking skills.
- Strong attention to detail, facilitation, team building, collaboration, organization, and problem solving skills.
- Ability to travel up to approximately 25% as project needs require.

- Engineer-in-Training (EIT) certification preferred.
