The Opportunity
StaffRight Associates is recruiting for a premier, established multinational leader in precision optics, for a Senior Mechanical / Manufacturing Engineer – Medical to join its newly expanded design and production facility in New England. This U.S. operation builds precision optical instruments for medical imaging and illumination. It pairs the resources and engineering heritage of a global organization with the agility of a small, close-knit team. The client is known for working side by side with customers to craft custom high-performance solutions. Its East Coast group is fast-moving, collaborative, and supportive, and it is steadily broadening its optical, optomechanical, and end-to-end product development and manufacturing capabilities.
Reporting directly to the head of Engineering and Production, you’ll pioneer new designs and processes for advanced optical and optomechanical assemblies and systems serving the biomedical market. The role’s focus shifts with each program. Early-phase work leans heavily into mechanical design, while maturing programs call for more hands-on production floor support. On every assigned project you’ll act as the go-to mechanical authority and own the associated SOPs, with real latitude to shape and grow the position as the operation scales.
What You’ll Do
- Architect complex mechanical and optomechanical systems, carrying them from early concept through detailed 3D CAD models.
- Engineer new materials-joining methods, including welding, bonding, soldering, and hermetic sealing, for precision optical assemblies.
- Execute advanced FEA, CFD, and GD&T-based tolerance studies that sharpen both performance and manufacturability.
- Partner directly with customers to capture requirements, support quoting, and convert intricate needs into solid engineering specifications.
- Orchestrate every phase of prototyping, from coordinating outside vendors to personally assembling, integrating, and aligning hardware.
- Spearhead root cause investigations into issues affecting system performance, assembly, and production.
- Build and run rigorous V&V test protocols that confirm product reliability and performance.
- Author in-depth technical reports and SOPs, keeping all design records aligned with ISO 13485.
- Champion a smooth handoff from design into manufacturing by applying DFM/DFA principles throughout.
- Qualify leading-edge materials and fabrication methods suited to medical device use.
- Mentor less-experienced engineers and steer cross-functional project teams with technical direction.
What You Bring
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or a closely related discipline; a Master’s is preferred.
- 5–9 years in mechanical design and product development, including at least two years in Medical Device work or another tightly regulated sector such as aerospace, defense, or semiconductor.
- Background at an optics- or Optomechanical-focused organization is highly valued.
- Expert command of 3D CAD (SolidWorks preferred), with extensive work on large, intricate assemblies and advanced modeling techniques.
- Deep grounding in Stress Analysis, Heat Transfer, and Vibration, plus mastery of GD&T (ASME Y14.5) for Tolerance Analysis.
- Hands-on experience with Welding, Soldering, Bonding, and Epoxying across Stainless Steel, Plastics, and Glass. Familiarity with metals, adhesives, and Cleaning Processes is a plus.
- Practical use of advanced Engineering Simulation Tools to validate and refine designs.
- Demonstrated experience with ISO 13485, FDA Design Control regulations, and ISO 14971 Risk Management within a Quality Management System.
- A track record of leading major design programs from initial concept to commercial launch in a regulated setting.
- Steady hands and comfort performing detailed work under a microscope.
- Outstanding communication and leadership skills, including the ability to explain complex technical topics clearly and develop fellow engineers.
- A self-starting, curious mindset and genuine drive to keep current in the field.
Compensation & Total Rewards
- Annual base salary of $100,000–$130,000 (full-time, direct hire)
- Medical, dental, and vision plans fully paid by the employer for employee coverage, plus an employer HSA contribution
- Short-term disability, long-term disability, and life insurance
- Generous paid time off, with parental leave included
- 401(k) with a 4% employer match, fully vested
- A flexible, professional workplace
