Summary

Apogee Research is at the forefront of a revolution in how the DoD operates: a turn towards compositional systems of systems instead of traditional monolithic architectures. This change is driven by a need for faster adaptation to adversarial environments, which requires the ability to field complex, resilient, distributed systems in days-to-weeks rather than months-to-years (much less decades).

Apogee Research is looking for a Senior Experimentation Engineer (full-time) to join our Arlington, VA office. Some travel to support test and exercise events is expected. Our ideal candidate is experienced in collaborating with teams to generate hypotheses, design experiments, gather and analyze data, and help develop practical solutions for impactful problems. All candidates must have or be eligible to obtain a DoD Top Secret Clearance, therefore all candidates must be a to apply.

The details of the position will vary based on the expertise and desires of the candidate and the specific project being executed, however, common themes include:
  • Develop methodologies that can be used to effectively evaluate the reliability and validity of research experiments and the resulting claims
  • Generate testable hypotheses from the novel claims being made by research teams
  • Lead the end-to-end experimental process, from data collection and analyzing the results to interpretation of key findings
  • Produce rapid software prototypes to test experimental hypotheses and/or analyze experimental results
  • Develop mathematical models of experimental results that can be applied toward developing new insights or research directions
  • Learn new technologies and/or develop fundamentally new approaches as needed
  • Propose innovative solutions and/or compare tradeoffs between multiple approaches

Qualified candidates should have:
  • Bachelor's degree in a relevant technical field (e.g. Physics, Computer Science/Engineering, Applied Math, etc.) plus 7 or more years of experience; or Master's. plus 5 years of experience; or PhD and 2 years of experience
  • Strong analytical and problem solving and organizational skills
  • Effective communication skills, both verbal and written
  • Relevant knowledge/experience with statistical methods and hypothesis testing
  • Demonstrated ability to be flexible and remain well organized in a fast-paced environment

Strong Preferred:
  • Experience in one or more of the following domains: Cyber, RF phenomenology, sensing, command and control, and distributed control systems.
  • DoD Top Secret Clearance
  • Relevant programming knowledge/experience with Python, Java, or C/C++
