Compensation Range:

The referenced pay range represents the minimum and maximum compensation for this job. Individual annual salaries/hourly rates will be set within the job's compensation range, and will be determined by considering factors including, but not limited to, market data, education, experience, qualifications, expertise of the individual, and internal equity considerations.

Responsibilities:

The Experimental Division is seeking a Laboratory Engineer to design and refine laboratory test set-ups as an instrument control specialist in support of laser-material interaction experiments. A successful candidate will be challenged by the multi-disciplinary nature of the work required to carry out these experiments and enjoys working on a team.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  • Develop system controls and interfaces for scientific equipment that will make experiments more efficient and mobile.
  • Design, build, and trouble-shoot experimental systems that include lasers, vacuum systems, and imaging and interferometric diagnostics.
  • Support the operation of existing and newly acquired equipment and instrumentation for laser physics experiments.
  • Work in an environment with a visible and audible laser operating at both single shot and constant 10 Hz rep rates.

MINIMUM EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE
  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or similar field and 2 years of R&D experience required
  • Or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Ability to obtain a security clearance

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
  • Experience with mechanical and electrical systems preferred
  • Experience designing control software for electrical and mechanical systems preferred
  • Experience with programming language such as Python or C++ preferred
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and ability to learn additional software operation preferred
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs. and navigate stairs/ladders preferred
  • Excellent verbal and written communication preferred
  • Work both independently and as a part of a multidisciplinary team preferred
  • Attention to detail preferred
  • Experience with image analysis, data processing, and efficient transfer of data preferred
  • Technical writing experience and documentation skills preferred
  • Familiarity with using LANs for instrument control preferred
