Job#: 3039314 Job Description: Embedded Software Engineer
Location: San Diego, California (Onsite)
Role Overview
In this role, you will help bring that vision to life by designing, developing, debugging, testing, and integrating embedded software and firmware for satellite communication systems and related hardware interfaces. Domain knowledge in RF systems, communications, DSP, antennas, or satellite payloads is helpful, but the must-have requirement is strong software engineering capability: clean design, hands-on coding, disciplined debugging, and rigorous test ownership.
Key Responsibilities
In this role, you will drive the design, development, and operation of embedded software functions that support satellite payload and hardware systems throughout the product lifecycle, from development and integration through launch, operations, and de-orbit.
- Own embedded software components through requirements analysis, design, implementation, unit testing, integration, and release readiness.
- Design maintainable, modular software in C, C++, Python, C#, or similar languages for Linux and/or real-time operating system environments.
- Debug complex software and hardware/software integration issues using logs, instrumentation, lab equipment, code reviews, and structured root-cause analysis.
- Build and execute test plans, including unit tests, integration tests, hardware-in-the-loop tests, regression tests, and automated validation workflows.
- Develop software that interfaces with devices and electronics using protocols such as I2C, I3C, SPI, RS-422, RS-485, Ethernet, and similar communication interfaces.
- Support high-reliability software development practices, including fault handling, resiliency, redundancy, observability, and clear operational diagnostics.
- Work with code delivery pipelines, automated build systems, and continuous integration workflows to support repeatable software delivery.
- Collaborate with hardware, systems, verification, manufacturing, and operations teams to support bring-up, integration, test execution, issue resolution, and release procedures.
- Contribute to software documentation, design reviews, test reports, defect tracking, and technical handoffs for internal and external stakeholders.
Required Qualifications
- 4+ years of professional software development experience, or equivalent experience building and delivering production-quality software.
- Strong programming skills in at least one systems or application language such as C, C++, Python, C#, Java, or similar.
- Demonstrated experience with software design, architecture, design patterns, maintainability, reliability, and scaling considerations for new or existing systems.
- Hands-on experience debugging complex software issues, including root-cause analysis across software, firmware, operating system, and hardware interface boundaries.
- Experience creating and executing tests for software quality, including unit, integration, regression, automated, and/or hardware-in-the-loop testing.
- Experience developing or integrating software in Linux, embedded Linux, or RTOS environments.
- Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or equivalent practical experience.
Preferred Qualifications- Experience designing, developing, and testing embedded software for high-reliability applications such as satellite systems, avionics, industrial control, automotive, medical devices, or other mission-critical environments.
- Experience with board bring-up, BSP development, driver-level software, OS-level debugging, firmware development, or hardware/software integration.
- Familiarity with RF systems, antenna systems, telecommunications, data communications, Layer 1 protocol concepts, DSP, routers, switches, or satellite communication systems.
- Experience deploying and sustaining embedded software in production, manufacturing, or high-volume test environments.
- Familiarity with optimizing software for production test throughput, automated validation, or repeatable lab test execution.
- Experience collaborating across systems, IC, FPGA, verification, antenna, manufacturing, hardware, and operations teams.
