Sr BA Semantic Markup & Module Content
We are seeking a Senior Business Analyst with deep, handson expertise in XML and semantic markup to support the evaluation, governance, and evolution of our markup standards. This role is critical as we expand beyond bookcentric workflows to support nonbook content, modular content, and componentbased publishing, particularly within the education and training market.
This position sits at the intersection of business strategy, content architecture, and technical standards. The ideal candidate brings strong ownership of semantic models, can define how markup should evolve over time, and is comfortable driving alignment across complex, multistakeholder environments.
Key Responsibilities
- Evaluate, maintain, and evolve XMLbased semantic markup standards, with a focus on nonbook and modular content
- Own and define the governance and update model for markup standards, including:
- How changes are proposed, reviewed, approved, versioned, and communicated
- How the model is sustained and evolved over time
- Serve as a subjectmatter expert for XML schema design and semantic structures
- Define and support new usecase extensions (e.g., structured casestudy boxes or new modular components), including:
- Clarifying semantic intent
- Providing example XML patterns
- Assessing schema and workflow impacts
- Ensure markup standards support:
- Modular content architectures
- Reuse and componentbased publishing
- Multichannel and multiproduct delivery
- Translate abstract or emerging business needs into clear, enforceable technical standards
- Collaborate with editorial, product, engineering, and external partners to resolve semantic, structural, and governance issues
- Produce clear, durable documentation, including:
- Markup standards and schemas
- Governance and decision guidelines
- Example XML illustrating what good looks like
Required Qualifications
- 3 5+ years of handson experience with XML, including:
- Defining, managing, or evolving XML schemas
- Owning or supporting semantic markup structures
- Strong working knowledge of XML BITS 2.0
- Proven experience supporting nonbook content and/or modular content
- Demonstrated experience evaluating and evolving semantic markup models in complex environments
- Strong understanding of modular content architectures, reuse strategies, and componentbased publishing
- Ability to translate conceptual business requirements into concrete, technically enforceable standards
- Excellent documentation, communication, and stakeholderfacilitation skills
Critical Clarification on XML vs. XSLT
- This role requires a strong, foundational understanding of XML itself, including semantic modeling, element/attribute design, schema constraints, and governance
- Candidates who overemphasize XSLT or transformation work, without demonstrated ownership of XML structures and semantic markup models, are not a good fit
- XSLT is considered a supporting skill, not a core competency; success depends on defining what the XML should be, not just how it is transformed
Preferred / NicetoHave Experience
- QTI experience (strong plus)
- Working knowledge of:
- XSLT (supporting skill)
- XLIFF
- Familiarity with schemaaware XML editors (e.g., Oxygen or similar)
- Experience in the education or training market
- Exposure to JSON or related formats is a plus, but XML is the primary focus
