*No C2C inquiries, please We are seeking an experienced Azure Database Architect for a high-impact state government initiative focused on modernizing the child welfare information system environment. This consultant will support analysis, architecture, design, implementation, and potential ongoing support of Azure-based databases and data lake solutions, with a primary focus on a modern Data Lakehouse environment and its integrated data reserves.
A major component of this initiative involves consolidating data from 87 county databases into a centralized data lake that will support a future enterprise platform. This position will collaborate with cross-functional teams to design secure, scalable, and efficient data storage and access solutions, optimize workflows, and support data-driven decision-making.
The ideal candidate will bring deep technical expertise across Azure data services, Databricks, Oracle, cloud integrations, performance optimization, security controls, and backup/recovery strategy. This role also requires the ability to mentor other architects and database engineers and provide knowledge transfer across teams.
Responsibilities - Support design and implementation efforts to improve, modernize, and transform data-driven service delivery
- Design and help implement Azure databases, data lakes, and lakehouse solutions
- Ensure data assets are structured, accessible, secure, and aligned with enterprise goals
- Recommend data platforms and tools to support enterprise data architecture
- Develop and optimize data models, schema design, and indexing strategies
- Ensure data access patterns are efficient and high-performing
- Support development and implementation of data transformation solutions and cloud infrastructure integrations
- Maintain required architecture and technical documentation
- Coordinate with relevant teams to meet security standards and compliance requirements
- Support design and development of disaster recovery, backup, and recovery strategies
- Provide knowledge transfer and mentorship to architects and database engineers
Required / Desired Qualifications - Strong experience designing, developing, and implementing data lakes and relational and non-relational databases in Azure
- Strong experience with Databricks
- Strong experience with Oracle databases
- Experience developing and implementing data transformation solutions and cloud infrastructure integrations
- Experience coding and testing programs and scripts to load data using Azure data load utilities
- Experience with CI/CD pipelines
- Strong understanding of cloud computing concepts
- Experience with Azure Monitor, Azure Data Factory, SQL Analytics, Query Performance Insight, Azure Resource Manager, Pearl, and Azure CLI/PowerShell
- Experience mentoring others in the required technologies
- Experience developing and implementing backup and recovery strategies using tools such as Azure Backup or Geo-replication
- Experience with role-based access control, encryption, and network security
- Strong organizational and time management skills
- Desired 10+ years of experience in data architecture or data management
- Knowledge of data concepts, data modeling, schema design, and indexing strategies
- Knowledge of Azure SQL instances, managed instances, and elastic pools
- Knowledge of data warehouse administration and Teradata data warehouse
Ideal Candidate Profile - Senior-level Azure data architect with both strategic and hands-on implementation experience
- Proven background building or modernizing enterprise cloud data platforms
- Comfortable working across architecture, engineering, security, and business teams
- Prior public sector or highly regulated environment experience is a plus
