Title: AWS Migration Engineer (Oracle AWS)
Location: Raleigh, NC (Hybrid preferred)
Engagement: 6-month contract to hire
Overview :-
We are seeking an experienced AWS Migration Engineer to lead a large scale Oracle database migration from on premises infrastructure to AWS. This role will own the end to end database migration effort using AWS Database Migration Service (DMS) and partner closely with multiple Java application teams to ensure application compatibility, performance, and smooth cutover.
This migration supports Shepard, a flagship LexisNexis product used by attorneys to verify whether case law remains valid. The current environment is fully legacy/on prem, and this initiative is focused on improving performance, scalability, and enabling faster feature development.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead and own the Oracle 19c on prem to Oracle on AWS migration strategy and execution
- Design and implement migration using AWS DMS, including:
- Schema conversion
- Full loads and ongoing replication
- Validation and reconciliation
- Plan and execute cutover strategies to minimize downtime for a ~16 TB database
- Partner closely with Java application teams to:
- Ensure schema and data compatibility
- Address performance, latency, and dependency considerations
- Configure and manage AWS infrastructure components:
- EC2, RDS for Oracle
- IAM, networking, and security as required for migration
- Leverage Oracle tools such as RMAN, Data Pump, and Data Guard where appropriate
- Build and maintain AWS Lambda functions to support migration workflows and automation
- Take ownership of a migration effort that has had initial POCs completed and drive it through production readiness
- Document architecture, migration plans, and operational procedures
Required Qualifications
- Demonstrated experience leading large scale database migrations (terabyte level) from on prem to AWS
- Strong hands on experience with:
- AWS DMS
- Oracle 19c
- RMAN, Data Pump, Data Guard
- Experience migrating Oracle Oracle (non OCI model)
- Solid understanding of AWS services, especially EC2, RDS, and Lambda
- Proven ability to collaborate across engineering teams, especially application developers
- Experience taking ownership of complex migrations from planning through execution
Nice to Have
- Prior experience modernizing legacy systems
- Performance tuning experience during or post migration
- Experience working in highly regulated or mission critical data environment
