Position Information

Fort Bend Maintenance is seeking a motivated and detail-oriented General Engineering Technician I to support utility coordination and permit activities within the Fort Bend Area Office. This position plays a vital role in reviewing and processing utility permit applications, coordinating with utility companies, developers, consultants, and local agencies, and ensuring compliance with TxDOT policies, standards, and procedures. Responsibilities include maintaining accurate records and tracking permit activities through the Right of Way Utility and Lease Information System (RULIS), assisting with utility relocations, preparing correspondence and reports, and providing technical support for transportation projects. The ideal candidate possesses strong organizational and communication skills, the ability to manage multiple assignments in a fast-paced environment, and a commitment to delivering exceptional customer service. Position Description

Performs and coordinates advanced transportation engineering operations or maintenance support work such as construction and complex maintenance contract inspection; light and heavy equipment operation; roadway maintenance; traffic control; helping the public during emergency situations; and training other employees. May serve as a lead worker. Employees at this level establish their own work plan and priorities to meet set objectives. Issues are rarely referred to the supervisor but are handled at the occurrence.

Essential Duties:

  • Conducts tests of highway construction materials, makes calculations, and records results.
  • Identifies, analyzes, and implements solutions for complex maintenance problems.
  • Inspects barricades to ensure compliance with barricade standards.
  • Inspects construction and routine and non-routine contract maintenance methods and workmanship to ensure contractors build and maintain roadways, bridges, traffic signals and related highway structures in accordance with plans and specifications.
  • Inspects traffic control devices and their placement at construction project sites for compliance with specifications for devices, safety laws, rules, regulations and the Texas Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices.
  • May serve as a lead worker and the related tasks.
  • Monitors and/or maintains construction records to ensure contractors comply with federal requirements regarding Equal Employment Opportunity, on-the-job training programs, the Historically Underutilized Business and the Disadvantaged Business Enterprise programs.
  • Performs detail design and quantity checks for plans, specifications, and estimate (PS&E).
  • Serves as project leader responsible for maintenance construction inspection activities for a medium to large maintenance construction project or for several small projects.
  • Performs other job responsibilities as assigned

Minimum Qualifications:

Education: High School Grad or Equivalent in general high school studies.

Experience: 4 years in transportation engineering support, roadway maintenance, construction inspection, or related work experience. (Experience can be satisfied by fulltime or prorated parttime equivalent).

Related college education or relevant technical training may be substituted for experience on a year per year basis. Substitutions for Minimum Qualifications

Licenses and Certifications:

Valid driver's license. This position requires driving a state vehicles.

Must have a Commercial Class "A" Driver's License with an "N" Endorsement or have obtained a CDL "A" License, within 120 calendar days from date of employment.

Currently Military or Veterans: US Military CDL Equivalent Conditions of Employment: US Military License candidates must successfully obtain Texas Class "A" CDL within 120 days of employment. ;br>
