Technical Architect – Azure Migration & Application Modernization

Role Summary

Exeter is looking for a seasoned Technical Architect with strong expertise in Azure cloud migration and application modernization. The candidate will lead initiatives to migrate on-prem applications to Azure while driving modernization strategies across enterprise systems.

This role requires close collaboration with cross-functional teams including product, engineering, infrastructure, security, and operations to design scalable, secure, and resilient cloud architectures.

Key Responsibilities

Application Assessment & Modernization

• Lead end-to-end application discovery and assessment (architecture, dependencies, performance, resiliency, compliance).
• Classify applications using strategies such as Rehost, Replatform, Refactor, Retire, Retain, Replace.
• Perform dependency mapping (systems, data flows, integrations, identity, middleware).
• Evaluate NFRs: scalability, reliability, performance, security, and availability.
• Create modernization roadmaps, migration waves, cost and risk analysis.
• Develop current-state and target-state architecture diagrams.

Azure Migration & Architecture

• Define and implement Azure Landing Zone architecture (subscriptions, networking, governance, security).
• Design Azure solutions using:
• Compute: Azure App Service, AKS, VMs, Azure Functions
• Data: Azure SQL, Managed Instance, Cosmos DB, Storage
• Integration: API Management, Service Bus, Event Grid, Logic Apps
• Lead migrations using Azure Migrate, automation, and CI/CD pipelines.
• Establish best practices for:
• Configuration & environment management
• Secrets & certificate handling
• Deployment and release strategies

DevOps & Automation

• Implement Infrastructure as Code (IaC) using Terraform, Bicep, or ARM.
• Build and manage CI/CD pipelines using Azure DevOps or GitHub Actions.
• Ensure robust release governance and environment consistency.

Security, Compliance & Operations

• Enforce enterprise security standards:
• RBAC, Managed Identities
• Encryption, Key Vault
• Secure network architecture
• Implement observability using:
• Azure Monitor, Log Analytics, Application Insights
• Define DR & resiliency strategies (backup, failover, multi-region).
• Ensure operational readiness through runbooks, SOPs, SLAs, and KT.
