Job Description
We're seeking an experienced F5 Network Load Balancer Engineer to join a dynamic infrastructure team responsible for designing, implementing, and maintaining enterprise-grade load balancing solutions. This is a hands-on technical role requiring deep expertise in F5 BIG-IP platforms and comprehensive understanding of network architecture, DNS, DHCP, and IPAM solutions.
Your day-to-day will involve configuring and maintaining load balancers, monitoring network performance, responding to incidents, and deploying solutions across both cloud and data center environments. You'll work closely with network and engineering teams to design complex load balancing architectures that support business-critical applications and services. This role requires someone who can balance daily operational responsibilities with strategic infrastructure design and optimization initiatives.
The ideal candidate brings strong technical expertise in F5 BIG-IP platforms (LTM, GTM, APM, ASM), experience with DDI platforms like Infoblox or BlueCat, and proven ability to troubleshoot complex network issues. You should be comfortable working independently while maintaining collaborative relationships across multiple technical teams. This position offers the opportunity to work with enterprise-scale infrastructure, influence architectural decisions, and implement modern load balancing technologies.
You'll be responsible for ensuring network interoperability, optimizing performance, and staying responsive to evolving customer requirements and technology advancements. This role reports to Network Infrastructure leadership and collaborates closely with cloud engineering, data center operations, and application development teams.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Configure, maintain, and optimize F5 BIG-IP Load Balancers across enterprise environments ensuring high availability and performance.
- Perform daily administration of network load balancer environment including monitoring, maintenance, and capacity planning.
- Track network performance metrics, proactively identify issues, and deploy timely solutions to minimize impact.
- Collaborate with network, cloud, and engineering teams to design and implement load balancing infrastructure for multi-cloud and data center environments.
- Design complex load balancing solutions that meet evolving business requirements and support application scalability.
- Implement, upgrade, and install new load balancing equipment and software versions following change management procedures.
- Optimize network efficiency through performance tuning, configuration optimization, and assessment of modern technologies.
- Respond decisively to changing customer requirements and technology evolution by adjusting architecture and configurations.
- Complete complex network assignments utilizing established load balancing processes and best practice procedures.
- Design and engineer DNS, DHCP, and IPAM (DDI) solutions that integrate seamlessly with load balancing infrastructure.
- Design and engineer DNS-based Global Server Load Balancing (GSLB) solutions for disaster recovery and geographic distribution.
- Design and engineer local application load balancing solutions including health monitoring, persistence, and SSL offloading.
- Maintain and optimize DDI platforms such as Infoblox, BlueCat, Nokia VitalQIP, or NS1 for enterprise DNS and IP management.
- Provide fourth-level escalation support for load balancing troubleshooting and resolve complex technical issues.
- Build and maintain collaborative relationships with application teams, security teams, and infrastructure groups.
- Conduct network architecture analysis and implement engineering solutions that enhance reliability and performance.
- Diagnose and resolve network problems through systematic troubleshooting and root cause analysis.
- Ensure network interoperability across diverse platforms and propose infrastructure improvements for load balancing architecture.
Required Experience/Skills
- 5+ years of hands-on experience configuring and managing F5 BIG-IP platforms in enterprise environments.
- Expert-level knowledge of F5 Load Balancer modules including LTM (Local Traffic Manager), GTM (Global Traffic Manager), APM, and ASM.
- Strong experience with alternative load balancing solutions such as Avi Networks (VMware NSX ALB) or Citrix NetScaler.
- Proven experience designing and engineering DNS, DHCP, and IPAM (DDI) solutions at enterprise scale.
- Hands-on experience with DDI platforms such as Infoblox, BlueCat, Nokia VitalQIP, or NS1 - this is required.
- Deep understanding of DNS-based Global Server Load Balancing (GSLB) design and implementation.
- Extensive experience with local application load balancing including health checks, persistence methods, and traffic management.
- Comprehensive knowledge of WAN/LAN network management, monitoring, and optimization techniques.
- Thorough understanding of network operating systems, network devices (switches, routers, firewalls), and networking protocols.
- Strong grasp of network architecture principles including OSI model, TCP/IP, routing protocols, and network security.
- Proven ability to design complex load balancing solutions that support cloud and hybrid infrastructure environments.
- Experience implementing high-availability configurations and disaster recovery architectures.
- Advanced troubleshooting skills with ability to diagnose and resolve complex network and application delivery issues.
- Strong understanding of SSL/TLS protocols, certificate management, and encryption technologies.
- Excellent communication skills with ability to explain technical concepts to diverse audiences.
- Ability to work independently while maintaining strong collaborative relationships across technical teams.
- Experience with change management processes and documentation standards.
Nice-to-Haves
- F5 certifications (F5 Certified BIG-IP Administrator, F5 Certified Technology Specialist).
- Infoblox or BlueCat certifications for DDI platforms.
- Experience with automation and scripting (Python, Ansible, Terraform) for load balancer configuration management.
- Knowledge of cloud load balancing services (AWS ELB/ALB, Azure Load Balancer, GCP Load Balancing).
- Familiarity with containerization and Kubernetes ingress controllers.
- Experience with application performance monitoring tools (Dynatrace, AppDynamics, New Relic).
- Understanding of DevOps practices and CI/CD pipeline integration with load balancers.
- Experience with WAF (Web Application Firewall) and DDoS mitigation technologies.
- Knowledge of iRules and Traffic Management Shell (TMSH) scripting.
- Background in financial services, healthcare, or other regulated industries.
- Experience with ITIL processes and incident/problem management frameworks.
Education
Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Network Engineering, or related technical field preferred. Equivalent professional experience in network engineering and load balancing will be considered.
