Position: VMware Infrastructure Engineer (Data Center Migration & Veeam)
Location: Remote job with Travel
Expected to be travelling 2-3 plants / DC in 2 weeks
Position Overview
We are seeking an experienced VMware Infrastructure Engineer to support a complex data center migration and infrastructure modernization project. The ideal candidate will have strong hands-on experience with VMware ESXi, Veeam Backup & Replication, enterprise storage, and Windows/Linux server administration. This role requires travel to multiple data center locations to perform on-site implementation, migration, testing, and decommissioning activities.
Key Responsibilities
Deploy and secure VMware ESXi and Veeam server images (Linux-based).
Configure and validate Layer 3 connectivity between ESXi hosts, Veeam infrastructure, and production environments.
Configure secure remote access for servers and storage infrastructure.
Install and configure VMware ESXi on new physical hardware.
Build and configure Veeam Backup & Replication servers for local backup operations.
Configure routing and network connectivity between backup servers and production infrastructure.
Manage and secure HPE SimpliVity host credentials and host profiles.
Configure Veeam backup jobs, scheduling, retention policies, and perform backup validation and restoration testing.
Remove endpoint security agents from servers as part of migration activities.
Perform planned server shutdowns and coordinate outage activities.
Execute pre-cutover backups using both Veeam and HPE SimpliVity.
Restore production virtual machines to newly deployed ESXi hosts.
Validate restored virtual machines and support Go/No-Go decision checkpoints.
Remove SimpliVity nodes from federation and prepare infrastructure for network cutover.
Perform server re-IP activities, DNS updates, Active Directory domain changes, ACL modifications, and related network configuration.
Conduct infrastructure validation, application testing, User Acceptance Testing (UAT), and support final production sign-off.
Execute rollback procedures when required.
Decommission legacy infrastructure, including SimpliVity nodes and physical hardware.
Configure HPE iLO interfaces, VMware datastores, and backup storage pools.
Install and configure Veeam Proxy servers.
Restore production workloads to final VMware infrastructure.
Perform final system validation, application testing, and production go-live activities.
Decommission temporary migration infrastructure and coordinate hardware shipment to designated locations.
Required Skills & Experience
5+ years of hands-on VMware infrastructure administration.
Strong experience with VMware ESXi installation, configuration, migration, and troubleshooting.
Experience with Veeam Backup & Replication, backup design, restore procedures, and replication.
Experience with HPE ProLiant servers, iLO management, and HPE SimpliVity.
Strong knowledge of VMware storage, datastores, networking, VLANs, Layer 3 routing, and virtual switching.
Experience performing production infrastructure migrations and data center cutovers.
Knowledge of Active Directory, DNS, DHCP, Windows Server, and Linux administration.
Experience with backup validation, disaster recovery, and rollback planning.
Strong understanding of enterprise networking concepts and server security.
Ability to document implementation activities and support change management processes.
Preferred Qualifications
VMware Certified Professional (VCP) certification.
Veeam Certified Engineer (VMCE).
Experience with HPE SimpliVity environments.
Experience working within enterprise data center migration projects.
Familiarity with ITIL change management and production support processes.
Travel Requirements
Must be willing and able to travel to multiple customer and data center locations.
Hands-on work in enterprise data centers is required throughout implementation, migration, testing, and go-live phases.
Ability to work during planned maintenance windows, including evenings and weekends when required.
