Summary

Position: Sr. SAP BTP Platform Operations Engineer
Location: Herndon, VA (3 days hybrid onsite)
 
Job Overview
We are looking for a Senior SAP BTP Platform Operations Engineer to manage and support SAP Business Technology Platform services in a secure, FedRAMP-authorized federal environment. This role will focus on platform reliability, security, compliance, service ownership, and operational governance.
The ideal candidate will have strong hands-on SAP BTP experience and the ability to manage services across multiple landscapes, lead incident resolution, oversee upgrades and patches, maintain platform extensions, and work closely with SAP, security, architecture, compliance, and business teams.
Key Responsibilities
  • Take overall ownership of SAP BTP services across multiple landscapes, including service availability, performance, security, and compliance.
  • Manage BTP global accounts, subaccounts, directories, entitlements, configurations, and service inventory.
  • Establish and maintain operational standards, configuration baselines, governance procedures, and change controls.
  • Act as the primary escalation point for platform incidents and lead root cause analysis and permanent remediation.
  • Monitor service availability and SLA performance, identify operational risks, and implement preventive measures.
  • Build and maintain monitoring, alerting, and observability for BTP services, including uptime, performance, integrations, and error rates.
  • Create, maintain, and test business continuity and disaster recovery (BC/DR) procedures for critical services.
  • Lead response to platform outages and service degradations, coordinating with internal teams and SAP support.
  • Manage the complete upgrade, patching, and lifecycle process for BTP services in accordance with SAP releases and federal change controls.
  • Review SAP Security Patch Day advisories and BTP release information and determine required remediation based on risk and compliance.
  • Coordinate with SAP to confirm patches and updates are appropriate for the FedRAMP-authorized environment.
  • Lead pre-production validation, regression testing, and production deployment activities for upgrades.
  • Operate and support deployed BTP platform extensions, including configuration, access controls, monitoring, and compliance checks.
  • Ensure extension changes follow approved change management and security review processes.
  • Troubleshoot extension and platform issues and coordinate resolution to minimize business disruption.
  • Maintain operational documentation, runbooks, procedures, and service status reports.
  • Work with Enterprise Architecture, Security/ISSO, Compliance, and Business teams to maintain alignment with regulatory and organizational requirements.
  • Participate in CAB, incident reviews, and operational governance meetings.
  • Provide leadership with updates on platform health, risks, planned upgrades, incidents, and compliance status.
  • Mentor junior platform engineers on BTP operations, security, compliance, and operational best practices.
  • Follow a security-first approach across all platform operations.
  • Participate in an on-call rotation for production services.
Required Skills and Experience
  • Strong hands-on experience operating SAP Business Technology Platform (BTP) across multiple service categories and environments, or comparable large-scale enterprise SaaS platforms.
  • Experience supporting highly scalable, enterprise-level, multi-tenant, microservices-based platforms.
  • Knowledge of Cloud Foundry architecture and Kubernetes fundamentals.
  • Strong understanding of BTP security and identity management, including:
    • XSUAA
    • Identity Authentication Service (IAS)
    • Role Collections
    • Trust configuration
    • Access reviews
  • Experience with enterprise ITSM processes, including incident, change, CAB/RFC, and problem management, preferably using platforms such as ServiceNow.
  • Familiarity with approved federal monitoring and observability tools.
  • Working knowledge of:
    • Identity federation
    • OAuth 2.0
    • SAML
    • Zero-trust access principles
  • Understanding of cloud-native operations, including API governance, event-driven architectures, and service dependencies.
  • Strong troubleshooting and investigation skills for complex platform configurations and integration issues.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to create clear runbooks, operational documentation, and management status reports.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or equivalent practical experience.
  • 5+ years of hands-on SAP BTP operational experience across multiple service categories and environments, or equivalent experience with large-scale enterprise platforms.
  • Demonstrated experience working in a FedRAMP-authorized or equivalent federally secured cloud environment.
  • Experience managing platform security, identity and access controls, and compliance documentation.
  • Experience with enterprise ITSM and change management processes.
  • Demonstrated service ownership experience with SLA accountability and incident management.
  • Basic knowledge of cloud networking, including API routing, service endpoints, encryption in transit, and cloud connectivity.
Preferred Qualifications
  • SAP BTP certifications, such as SAP Certified Associate – SAP BTP or SAP Integration Suite certification.
  • Previous experience as a Service Owner, Platform Lead, or comparable leadership role.
  • Strong analytical and systematic problem-solving skills with a high level of ownership and accountability.
  • Experience working in regulated, federal, or national security environments with strict compliance requirements.
Work Requirements
  • On-call rotation is required for production services.
  • Role operates in a FedRAMP-authorized, federally secure environment.
