Utilities Engineer
Position Summary

The Utilities Engineer is responsible for leading utility operations, environmental compliance programs, and infrastructure improvement initiatives within a manufacturing environment. This role provides technical expertise and project leadership for critical utility systems, ensuring reliable operation, regulatory compliance, sustainability, and cost-effective performance. The Utilities Engineer partners with Operations, Maintenance, Engineering, Environmental Health & Safety (EHS), and external contractors to support production objectives and long-term business goals.
Key Responsibilities
  • Lead the planning, budgeting, execution, and oversight of utility-related projects and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Manage critical utility systems including HVAC, refrigeration, boilers, steam distribution, compressed air systems, wastewater treatment, and electrical distribution networks.
  • Ensure utility infrastructure supports current and future production requirements while maintaining operational reliability.
  • Identify and implement energy conservation and sustainability initiatives to optimize resource consumption and reduce operating costs.
  • Monitor utility performance, analyze energy utilization, and develop recommendations to improve efficiency and system effectiveness.
  • Develop and maintain utility-related Key Performance Indicators (KPIs), performance reports, and budget tracking metrics.
  • Lead asset reliability and preventive maintenance programs for utility equipment and systems.
  • Oversee wastewater treatment operations and environmental compliance activities to ensure adherence to permit requirements.
  • Coordinate and manage third-party vendors, contractors, and service providers supporting facility utility operations.
  • Prepare and maintain environmental reports, permits, compliance documentation, and audit records.
  • Ensure compliance with all applicable environmental, safety, and operational regulations, including federal, state, and local requirements.
  • Support emissions monitoring, waste management programs, and environmental reporting activities.
  • Develop and conduct training programs related to utility operations, environmental compliance, and safety procedures.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to drive operational excellence, reliability improvements, and sustainability initiatives.
  • Promote a culture of safety, environmental stewardship, and continuous improvement throughout facility operations.
Required Qualifications
Education
  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering or a related technical discipline.
  • Preferred concentrations include Mechanical, Industrial, Environmental, Chemical, or related engineering fields.
Experience
  • Minimum of five years of experience managing utility systems, maintenance, reliability programs, or environmental operations within a manufacturing environment.
  • Experience supporting energy-intensive industrial operations.
  • Proven experience managing infrastructure improvement projects and capital investments.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead cross-functional initiatives and manage contractor relationships.
Technical Knowledge and Expertise
  • Industrial refrigeration systems and associated safety programs.
  • High-pressure boiler operations and regulatory requirements.
  • Wastewater treatment systems and environmental compliance.
  • HVAC and compressed air system optimization.
  • Utility asset management and reliability engineering principles.
  • Environmental permitting, reporting, and audit management.
  • Energy management and sustainability initiatives.
  • Preventive and predictive maintenance strategies.
  • Root cause analysis and continuous improvement methodologies.
  • Occupational safety and environmental regulatory compliance.
Certifications
  • Wastewater Systems Certification preferred or required based on facility needs.
  • Additional certifications related to environmental compliance, reliability, safety, or project management are advantageous.
