The ideal candidate is a hands-on Power BI professional with strong SQL development skills, experience implementing enterprise reporting solutions, and the ability to work independently with both technical teams and business stakeholders.

This role combines Power BI development, data analysis, reporting architecture, and business requirements gathering.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design, configure, and maintain a stable and scalable Power BI Service environment.

  • Develop advanced Power BI reports, interactive dashboards, and complex custom data visualizations.

  • Write and optimize SQL queries to extract, transform, and validate data from Azure SQL Server and other data sources.

  • Migrate existing Tableau and Crystal Reports into Power BI while maintaining data accuracy and reporting functionality.

  • Perform data validation, reconciliation, and root cause analysis across multiple data sources.

  • Investigate reporting discrepancies and data anomalies, particularly within financial and student loan datasets.

  • Develop and maintain Power BI semantic models, DAX calculations, Power Query transformations, and data refresh processes.

  • Configure Power BI security, access management, workspace permissions, and appropriate data protection controls.

  • Identify and remediate accessibility issues within reports and dashboards.

  • Develop automated reporting and data export processes, including Excel integration.

  • Collaborate with business stakeholders to gather requirements, document business rules, and translate reporting needs into technical solutions.

  • Work with development teams to establish reporting standards, improve performance, and implement best practices.

  • Create technical documentation, user guides, and reporting procedures.

  • Conduct Power BI training sessions, provide mentoring, and support knowledge transfer to agency personnel.

  • Communicate project progress, technical issues, and recommendations to project leadership.

  • Provide daily project status updates and track progress against established milestones.

Required Qualifications

  • 5 or more years of advanced, hands-on Power BI development experience.

  • Strong SQL development skills, including complex queries, joins, data transformations, and query optimization.

  • Experience with Azure SQL Server or Microsoft SQL Server.

  • Advanced knowledge of Power BI Desktop, Power BI Service, DAX, Power Query, and data modeling.

  • Experience configuring Power BI workspaces, refresh schedules, security, and access controls.

  • Demonstrated experience building enterprise dashboards and complex interactive reports.

  • Strong understanding of data validation, data quality, and reporting accuracy.

  • Ability to independently analyze and troubleshoot reporting and data issues.

  • Experience gathering business requirements and translating them into technical specifications.

  • Strong technical documentation skills.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including experience presenting to business leaders and technical stakeholders.

  • Ability to work independently and manage multiple reporting priorities.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience migrating reports from Tableau or Crystal Reports to Power BI.

  • Experience working with student loan, financial services, lending, or higher education data.

  • Knowledge of student loan servicing, including loan status, repayment, and forbearance data.

  • Experience designing accessible Power BI reports and remediating accessibility issues.

  • Familiarity with Microsoft Power Platform administration and integration.

  • Experience implementing row-level security, enterprise semantic models, and automated reporting processes.

  • Previous experience supporting government agencies or public sector organizations.

  • Experience conducting technical training and mentoring business users.

Why This Opportunity?

This is an opportunity to take a leading technical role in modernizing an enterprise reporting environment for a Minnesota state government agency.

The selected developer will have the opportunity to influence reporting architecture, establish Power BI best practices, solve meaningful data quality challenges, and help business users make better decisions through improved reporting and analytics.
