Position Overview
We are seeking an IT Software Engineer III to support development, modernization, and maintenance of enterprise mainframe applications. This role focuses on COBOL-based development, system enhancements, testing, and production support in a high-volume, mission-critical environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Design, develop, and maintain COBOL programs, batch jobs, scripts, and reports
- Implement system changes driven by modernization and business requirements
- Support database updates and conversion programs
- Gather and analyze requirements from business stakeholders
- Develop and maintain functional specifications and technical documentation
- Execute testing across multiple phases including unit, integration, and regression testing
- Perform code reviews and ensure adherence to quality standards
- Prepare and manage code releases using configuration management tools
- Support production systems, including incident resolution and troubleshooting
- Participate in root cause analysis and system recovery efforts
- Provide on-call support and perform maintenance activities
- Mentor team members and support knowledge transfer initiatives
Required Qualifications
- Strong experience in COBOL development (COBOL 85)
- Experience with mainframe environments, batch processing, and job scheduling
- Hands-on experience with tools such as CMPlus, FILECRACKER, DMS
- Experience with command-based systems and data retrieval processes
- Strong experience in testing, debugging, and production support
- Experience in requirements gathering and documentation
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
- Ability to work in team-based, cross-functional environments
Preferred Qualifications
- Familiarity with legacy reporting systems and data structures
- Experience supporting systems with frequent regulatory or legislative changes
- Experience working in enterprise or government environments
