Summary

Role: Principal Backend Engineer Identity & Access Management (IAM/SSO)

Position :: 100 % Remote

We are seeking a Principal Backend Engineer with deep expertise in Identity & Access Management (IAM) and Single Sign-On (SSO) to lead the design and evolution of our authentication and authorization platforms.

Technical Requirements

Core Expertise

  • Cloud: Deep expertise in Google Cloud Platform (Google Cloud Platform)
  • Languages: Strong backend development in Java/Kotlin (Node.js or Python is a plus)
  • Identity: Hands-on experience with Google Identity Platform, Firebase Auth, OAuth 2.0, and OIDC
  • APIs & Data: Strong experience in REST/gRPC API design and scalable SQL databases

Preferred Qualifications

  • Infrastructure as Code: Terraform, Helm, Kubernetes
  • DevOps: Experience with Harness, LaunchDarkly
  • Domain: Experience building high-scale e-commerce or transactional system

Key Responsibilities

1. Architecture & Technical Leadership

  • Own the end-to-end IAM architecture, leveraging Google Identity Platform (GIP) and modern identity standards.
  • Design and implement secure authentication and authorization flows using OAuth 2.0 and OpenID Connect (OIDC).
  • Lead backend architecture using microservices, API-first design, and event-driven systems on Google Cloud Platform (Pub/Sub, Cloud Functions, etc.).
  • Contribute actively to development (~75% hands-on coding) while driving technical debt reduction and system hardening.

2. Identity & Access Management (IAM) Expertise

  • Architect and implement OAuth flows (Authorization Code, PKCE, Client Credentials) across SPA, mobile, and server-to-server applications.
  • Configure and optimize Google Identity Platform, including multi-tenant setups, custom blocking functions, and identity provider integrations (Google, Apple, social login).
  • Enforce security best practices, including:
    • JWT validation and lifecycle management
    • Token rotation and secure storage
    • Fine-grained scope and access control policies

3. Engineering Excellence & Platform Standardization

  • Drive CI/CD best practices and improve release velocity using tools like Harness.
  • Build reusable starter kits, SDKs, and reference architectures for backend and IAM integrations.
  • Establish strong observability practices using AppDynamics, Grafana, and OpenTelemetry for system health, tracing, and performance.

4. Mentorship & Cross-Functional Collaboration

  • Mentor engineers through code reviews, design sessions, and technical workshops.
  • Promote a culture of engineering excellence, ownership, and continuous learning.
  • Partner with Product, Security, and UX teams to translate complex IAM concepts into scalable solutions
