Civil Engineer (EIT) - Land Development
Opportunity Type: Contract-to-Hire
Experience Level: 2-5 Years
Position Overview
An established civil engineering team is seeking a Civil Engineer (EIT) with 2-5 years of experience in land development, site design, roadway design, or related civil engineering projects.
This is an opportunity to work directly with a licensed Senior Civil Engineer, contribute to projects from initial planning through construction, and continue developing your technical expertise while working toward your Professional Engineer (PE) license.
The position begins as a contract-to-hire opportunity, with the potential to transition into a full-time position or continue as a long-term contract role based on individual performance, project needs, and business requirements.
With a diverse project portfolio, in-house surveying resources, and direct access to experienced engineering professionals, this role offers the opportunity to take ownership of your work while building a long-term career in civil engineering.
Why Consider This Opportunity?
Professional Mentorship: Receive direct guidance and design reviews from a licensed Senior Civil Engineer as you progress toward your PE license.
PE Licensure Support: Access reimbursement for exam preparation and associated exam costs, along with time off to sit for the exam.
Career Development: Explore additional professional development opportunities, including the potential to pursue LSIT and Professional Land Surveyor (PLS) licensure.
Project Variety: Contribute to site development, roadway, parks, stormwater management, floodplain, and public infrastructure projects.
Collaborative Environment: Work alongside in-house survey professionals and other design specialists, allowing for closer coordination between field data collection and engineering design.
Regional Exposure: Support projects throughout St. Louis, Kansas City, Missouri, and eastern Kansas, with occasional company-paid overnight travel.
Flexible Long-Term Potential: Begin on a contract-to-hire basis, with the opportunity for full-time employment or an extended contract depending on performance and business needs.
Key Responsibilities
Develop site layouts, grading and drainage plans, roadway and utility designs, and erosion and sediment control plans.
Perform engineering calculations and hydrologic/hydraulic analyses, including preparation of drainage reports and supporting technical documentation.
Prepare and revise construction drawings using survey data, topographic information, existing utilities, and other project requirements.
Research and apply applicable design standards, local regulations, and permitting requirements, including those established by MSD, St. Louis County, and MoDOT.
Prepare permit applications, respond to agency review comments, and assist with the approval process.
Complete quantity takeoffs and construction cost estimates to support project planning and execution.
Coordinate with project engineers, surveyors, landscape architects, other design professionals, and regulatory agencies.
Participate in site visits and construction observation activities as project needs require.
Manage assigned tasks, maintain organized project documentation, communicate project updates, and meet established deadlines.
Review work for accuracy, coordination, and constructability before submitting designs for review.
Required Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering from an ABET-accredited program.
Approximately 2-5 years of relevant experience in civil engineering, land development, site design, roadway design, or similar projects.
Engineer-in-Training (EIT) certification and a demonstrated commitment to pursuing Professional Engineer (PE) licensure.
Experience preparing grading, drainage, utility, and erosion control plans, along with supporting engineering calculations.
Proficiency with AutoCAD Civil 3D, Carlson, OpenRoads, or comparable civil design software.
Strong Microsoft Excel skills, including the ability to perform engineering calculations, quantity takeoffs, and cost estimates.
Effective written and verbal communication skills and the ability to collaborate across project teams.
Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and the ability to manage competing priorities.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience with stormwater management design and hydrology/hydraulics software.
Ability to interpret survey data, identify site constraints, and resolve potential design conflicts.
Experience preparing technical reports, responding to regulatory agency comments, and supporting construction-phase engineering questions.
Career Opportunity
This position is well suited for a developing civil engineer who wants to strengthen their design capabilities, gain exposure to a variety of land development projects, and work toward professional licensure with guidance from experienced engineers.
The contract-to-hire arrangement provides an initial opportunity to demonstrate your capabilities and establish a working relationship with the team. Depending on individual performance and ongoing business needs, the position may develop into a full-time role or a long-term contract engagement.
