  • Lead Kubernetes Platform Engineer

Summary

CANDIDATES MUST BE ABLE TO WORK ON SITE IN ROCKVILLE, MD 5 DAYS A WEEK

Role Overview

We're seeking a Platform Engineer to support a modern, cloud-native environment spanning multiple cloud providers. This role focuses on Kubernetes operations, internal developer platform enablement, distributed systems support, and platform automation. The ideal candidate thrives in highly scalable, multi-tenant environments and enjoys building durable, developer-friendly infrastructure.

Key Responsibilities

  • Operate and maintain Kubernetes clusters across Azure and Google Cloud environments, including cluster architecture, networking, access controls, governance policies, version upgrades, and cost optimization initiatives.

  • Partner with engineering teams to enhance CI/CD capabilities using Jenkins and GitHub Actions. Maintain pipeline-as-code standards, support environment promotion workflows, manage secrets securely, and implement artifact traceability and rollback processes.

  • Contribute to Internal Developer Platform (IDP) initiatives using Backstage. Develop and maintain service catalog entries, documentation standards, scaffolding templates, and governance mechanisms that establish consistent "golden paths" for engineering teams.

  • Design and support workflow orchestration using Argo Workflows for complex task automation (non-CI/CD use cases), including DAG configuration, resource management, artifact handling, and multi-team isolation strategies.

  • Support production-grade distributed data platforms such as Kafka, CockroachDB/Postgres-compatible systems, Couchbase, and Elasticsearch. Responsibilities include performance tuning, replication strategy, backup and recovery processes, and disaster recovery planning.

  • Enhance observability practices using Prometheus, Grafana, and distributed tracing tools. Define and implement SLIs/SLOs, optimize alerting strategies, and develop meaningful dashboards and operational runbooks.

  • Develop platform-level tooling and automation using Go, Node.js, and C#/.NET. Build and maintain APIs, CLI tools, Kubernetes controllers/operators, and supporting services that streamline platform operations and enforce standards.

Qualifications

  • 5-8 years of relevant experience in platform engineering, DevOps, or cloud infrastructure roles.

  • Strong hands-on experience managing Kubernetes in multi-cloud environments (Azure and Google Cloud preferred).

  • Proven experience designing and maintaining CI/CD pipelines with Jenkins and/or GitHub Actions.

  • Familiarity with Backstage or similar internal developer platform tooling.

  • Experience implementing workflow orchestration solutions such as Argo Workflows (beyond traditional CI/CD usage).

  • Operational knowledge of distributed data technologies (e.g., Kafka, CockroachDB/Postgres variants, Couchbase, Elasticsearch).

  • Background in observability engineering, including metrics, tracing, SLO design, and production alerting.

  • Proficiency in at least one platform-oriented programming language (Go, Node.js, or C#/.NET).
